Going From Independent Study to Regular Coursework

This past spring, I was able to take an independent study course with an adjunct professor whose specialty matched my area of interest, but which he was not not scheduled to teach about that particular semester. But he is the UCollege branch, which caters mostly to non-traditional students. And while full-time, traditional students can normally take up to one course a semester in said division of the university, they may not traditionally take independent studies through it. They approved my course last time only because misinformation on their part led me to believe I could take it, and that they were simply processing the needed forms, which once they finally realized was not the case, it was already a few weeks in, and I'd done a fair bit of work for the course. All that is a long way of saying that I cannot do another independent study with him.

As it happens though, this semester he is teaching a course that aligns with my interest, and though overlapping slightly with the material he and I covered last semester, is essentially a related course that covers earlier material related to the topic (but, this being a history course, that isn't to say it will necessarily be easier material).

What I'm trying to decide is whether or not to take it. Some of the factors influencing my decision:

I only need 52 credits over the next four semesters to graduate, so taking more than 15 credits in any given semester is pretty pointless.

At present, I'm enrolled for 15 credits, which translates to five courses. Of those, three are functional requirements and two are electives. In one instance though, the professor moved me from the waiting list into his class as a personal favor, essentially obligating me to take it. And hell, I'd do so anyway, because he's one of the best profs I've ever had. The last course I could drop, but it seems rather interesting and unlike previous courses I've had, plus I've heard nothing but praise about the prof teaching it.

The professor who I had for an independent study, and who I'd have if I took this course, is phenomenal. My last course with him was my favorite to date, largely because of subject matter, but also because of the course format.

I got an A+ with him before, and would readily expect to perform as well in this class. Certainly anything below an A- would be out of the question.

By it being an independent study, there was far more flexibility in say class discussion topic, exam dates, and other such matters, than could exist in a class with other people. Likewise, the quality of discussion would likely suffer, as the topic is sufficiently obscure that it seems improbable other students would be able to keep up otherwise. In other words, I worry that I'm setting myself up for a dissapointment if I enroll.

The time is awful. Right now, I never start before 11 AM or finish later than 5 PM (and even that happens only once a week). This class however would have me finishing up as late as 9PM. And I live off campus. That means getting home at 9:30 on those days I don't stay after to talk with him.

So I'm torn. Should I take his class or not?
