Question for W&M IR majors

Is previous knowledge of calculus/linear algebra required for the economic components of the IR major?

For the "internship" option for the capstone requirement, what type of work can be expected?

Are you allowed to petition for courses not included on the list of electives to count toward the major? I don't understand why ANTH People's and Cultures of Africa is on the list of approved electives, and ANTH People's and Cultures of Asia isn't... just doesn't make any sense to me.

For those who have done the summer study abroad to Tsing hua (China) or know of people who have: how many language credits does one receive?

1) No calculus is required, though you will learn some naturally along the way. I was calculus averse coming in and have had no problems whatsoever.

2) Say, a summer at the State Department or spending a semester at the DC program where one of your courses is an internship with an NGO, international institution, or government agency. These are for credit and are not your ‘pencil pusher coffee fetcher wastes of time’ type internships. Depending on your internship, you could be doing anything from representing your government agency at inter-agency meetings, assisting in writing and researching policy briefs, attending Congressional hearings, drafting web releases, organizing large conferences, and that sort of thing.

3) Its not an exhaustive list and it is really easy to drop by the chair’s office or shoot him or her an email to get a relatively simple matter like that cleared up. The electives are just that - pretty much anything else that is international themed.

Thanks Heretohelp. I never took calculus in high school, so that’s a relief.

Feel free to contact the IR Department (757-221-3082) to explore some of the electives available in the major and the capstone internship components that might be expected. They’re certainly among the best sources for such questions.
