I have taken 2 history AP tests, both world and US. I received a 5 on both and world history is not even on the site, and i'm presuming it doesn't count. It says that US counts for "Earns 8 units credit; satisfies American History and Institutions require*ment; earns credit for one course of Social Sciences general education requirement."

would i have to take 17 a/b/c or does the 8 credits make me exempt?

Hi !
Hopefully I can answer this. You don’t have to take 17a/b/c because you’ve satisfied the American His. requirement since you only need one course, but some majors will require you to take one of or all of 17 series. Plus, you can take one of the 17 series because it fulfills a writing requirement (you need 6 writing courses) and having a strong background in American Hist would make the class much easier. As for world history from the chart I saw([College Board Advanced Placement Credit - General Education Program - UC Santa Barbara 2008-2009 General Catalog](http://www.catalog.ucsb.edu/current/general/gechart.htm)), World History gives you 8 units as well but doesn’t exempt you from anything else.

Just a note though the units acquired before matriculating into UCSB won’t be counted until the end so you have to make sure to keep up with your MCP once here ! :]

I am going to be a history major and the paper says take 2 of 3 3-quarter classes (either US, Western, World). Would you have any idea if I would get one of the two prerequisites done as a history major?

The 5 on AP US His satisfies those GE requirements which means you don’t need to take Hist17A, B or C in order to fullfill the requirements. However, it doesn’t have a “UCSB course equivalent,” which means that you still have to take 2 of the 3 classes. The only history AP that has a UCSB equivalent is “AP US gov and politics” (equivalent to Political Science 12 at UCSB).
