Hi there!

I am going to double major in CS and applied math and CS lists CS70 as a prerequisite while Math 55 is a prerequisite for applied math. According to the course catalog, these 2 courses are pretty similar and taking one of them means I can't get credits for the other. So does the 2 departments actually accept either one of the two? It would seem terribly inefficient to demand students to sit through both and get only 4 credits out of the whole ordeal. Anyone who had done this care to share?

I recently switched from EECS to math and they let me use CS70 for a Math 55 requirement. I’d say go with CS70 because it’s harder; also CS department will not like it if you take Math 55. You may still have to talk to the administration to make sure everything is clear though.

If you are a double major in Math and CS you can take either and it’ll satisfy both the CS70 requirement for CS and the Math 55 requirement for Math

That’s great. I will probably take CS 70 since I am more interested in the CS side of things. Thanks!

CS70 is Math55 content that is useful for CS applications. I did not hear that it’s harder, but you should probably take CS70.

what about for just a math major? can a math major take cs70 in place of 55? (are there any cs prereqs for cs70…?)

No CS prereqs for cs 70, but I don’t know if the math department will let you. You should probably ask first.
