question on essay

for essay 1.b. , does it mean to explain an experience that was not part of my extracurricular activities or formal classroom?

so, i have to tell an experience that was other than from my extracurricular activities?

bump please

The question encourages applicants to write about their lives other than as students, e.g., what sorts of things do you do with your friends during the weekend (not when you're in school or engaged in after-school activities).

for instance, i wrote about scuba-diving

would traveling the whole west coast of america with a friend be a good topic?

How about identifying one particular moment in that trip--maybe an "a-ha" kind of moment--and elaborating on it?

remember this word: METAPHOR. so write about your experience, but use it as a metaphor for something greater. for instance, i wrote about scuba-diving, and i played on the idea of the sea of knowledge, and my exploring a tiny portion of it. just don't directly allude to your metaphor, cuz that makes it a simile. and those just suck.

can i write about crashing my car?

was it a fun experience?

crashing my car? at the time..... yes. but looking back on it, hmmm.... no. but it sure taught me a lot.

my daughter wrote about her first day of ballroom dancing lessons. she started out taking it to fulfill an "action" requirement of IB, but ended up continuing because it was fun. Most of it was written from the perspective of the first day of class and all the funny things that happened there.
