Question on including college name in common app essay

Hello everyone,

I just have a quick question about the common app essay. So, I understand that the common app essay goes out too all the colleges that I apply to, so I should make it focused more around me rather than a specific college. However, one of the competitions that I have won and I would like to mention is actually hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. As one of the few finalists that were chosen for the competition, I was actually able to present in front of judges at UPenn. Thus, would it be acceptable to mention the name “University of Pennsylvania” within my common app essay with regards to this competition? or is simply the mention of another college’s name on the common app essay a red flag?

Thanks!

If the HS activity/competition you won is hosted by UPenn, then it is okay to include it because that is the name of the activity.

I mentioned an award I received from the University of Rochester and it was a scholarship to attend their school. I think you’ll be fine.

You list the name of the competition, not the host institution, unless the 2 are the same. Guessing from your Chance Me thread, something like “Finalist, KWHS Global Regions Investment Competition (Wharton)” not “University of Pennsylvania”.
