So let’s say your GPA changed after you received a degree or some (or maybe an intermediate degree like associate). Do we list our current GPA or the GPA you had at the time you received the degree? Or both? If I want to list out both, how would I write it? GPA at time of award? Thanks!
Cumulative GPA refers to the cumulative GPA at a single institution, for a single pursuit. Scenarios:
- You get an Associate’s and then pursue a Bachelor’s at a different school. You have two completely separate cumulative GPAs - one for each institution.
- You get an Associate’s and then pursue a Bachelor’s at the same school. If your Associate’s courses fulfill more than one or two requirements for your Bachelor’s (including free electives), then list a single cumulative GPA. If it fulfills nearly no requirements for the Bachelor’s, then separate the GPAs.
- You get a Bachelor’s degree and then pursue a Master’s at a different institution. You have two completely separate cumulative GPAs.
- You get a Bachelor’s degree and then pursue a Master’s at the same institution. You have two completely separate cumulative GPAs.
- You get a Bachelor’s degree and, while pursuing that degree, submatriculate into a Master’s program; courses for your Master’s program fulfill requirements for your Bachelor’s degree. This is a little murky so is worth clarifying with your school, but I would presume that all courses taken up until you get your Bachelor’s degree are one GPA, and all taken afterward are a separate GPA. If your graduation dates are very close to each other (i.e. within six months, including simultaneous), then I would use all undergraduate-level courses for your Bachelor’s GPA and graduate-level courses for your Master’s GPA (I would err against double-counting any courses), but this just needs clarification from your institution.
If you want to be sure you’re declaring things appropriately, then just go to one of the following for answers:
a) Your academic adviser
b) Your major department
c) Career services
