Hi. So, my daughter is a returning student. We completed the FAFSA last year as well as the CSS. I put it off (although none of it is due until 5/1).
My intention was to complete the FAFSA and CSS essentially without my D. It worked last year…I guess I must have signed it for her…not sure.
With the new FSA ID, is it still possible for the parent to complete the FAFSA without the student?
No judgements here please as in “she’s the student, she should do it.” Just trying to find out if its possible and thank you.
You need all of her username and password information…and the answers to her security questions just in case.
Would you be willing to give all of yours to your daughter after you complete the parent information!
No, but I would be willing to give mine to my parents if they were still alive and would be willing to complete these forms.
What do you mean “all of her username and password information?”
The format has changed this year. Your student now needs a username and password. Not just a PIN. You need the same.
Have you and your student done the changeover to username and password! If not…you need to do that. Your old PIN won’t work anymore.
You would have to get a FSA ID for her as well as yourself. For each, you’d need a ssn and a different email. There will be a series of questions like favorite color or dogs name, and you have to answer AND WRITE THE ANSWERS DOWN.
For one daughter, she sat here with me last June and did hers and it still got all screwed up. She entered her ssn wrong, she didn’t write down the answers, it took forever, more than 3 weeks to clear. For the second daughter who was away for the summer with no internet, I did it. With her permission, I submitted it. This year I pulled out the fsa id’s, filled in the forms, called them and asked if they were okay with it and submitted. Even when they are here they just say ‘whatever’ if I ask them if it is alright to submit.
You could also have daughter set up her FSA ID and then just give it to you. You could do it together over the phone or online. She could do her part and save it and then send it to you to complete your part. Whatever feels right.
Agree…write EVERYTHING down.
As an FYI…the email addresses can not be the same for you and your daughter when applying for the FSA ID. So…you can’t apply using your email for both.
The answer to the question is NO, unless you either A) establish a FSA ID for your daughter using a different email address than you used to establish your FSA ID and then you log in using the FSA ID that you created pretending to be your daughter; or B) your daughter creates her own FSA ID using an email address different than what you used to create your FSA ID, and your daughter then tells you her log in information so that you can access FAFSA while pretending to be your daughter. The government does not look kindly at either scenario A or B.
If she signs in with her FSA ID then she can click on FAFSA renewal and year 2016-17, most of the info will already be filled in from last year. Then she can make a save key and give you the save key to start off where she stopped and you can enter your info.
I hope you are not putting off doing your taxes. To get an accurate aid package they need current tax information.
Absolutely, but daughter will have to sign in again when everything is done in order to sign the FAFSA and get it submitted for processing.
Taxes are done. FA forms are due 5/1 so completely on schedule, but thanks
