Question regarding gpa

Okay…so obviously classes like Phys Ed, Health, etc determine very little if anything about character and capabilites. But my question is…do colleges consider your overall gpa with these classes…or do they recalculate gpa’s without these classes. If this is the case what courses and classes are actually considered for overall GPA?

Don't know for sure, but I would venture to say that colleges do not consider classes like Phys Ed, Health or Driver's Ed -

My HS only includes major subjects in GPA calculation, and it indicates so on our transcripts.

Each college is different, and some don't consider any Frosh grades (such as Princeton and the UC's) at all. But, in general, the college gpa is calculated on the core academic subjects, such as history, math, english, science, and foreign language plus relevant electives, orchestra, band, journalism and the like, but exclude non-academics such as marching band, auto shop, drivers ed, health, religion, etc. But, some schools cap the number of electives that are included, for example, they might only include one year of band/orchestra in the calc, even if you take 4.

If you dig hard thru college websites, some sites are pretty clear on what courses count and which do not. Other sites are hard to clarify.

Do colleges really factor out religion classes? We have theology/philosophy classes, and they're really challenging...at my school they count as much as English and Math and so on.

I really hope the colleges consider these...

PE and health need to be more emphasized in high school and sure as hell do determine capabilities. Look at all the fat kids running around out there.

Joev: I don't disagree that pe and health are good to have classes, but the colleges don't count 'em.

Hyancithgirl: like everything in this process....'it depends.' Obviously, religious schools such as Notre Dame would have a different take on HS religion classes than would secular state unversties. But, as a general rule, if you are in a religious HS(such a catholic HS), and religion is required for all four years, then years 1-3 will likely not count. However, our local catholic HS has a very rigorous Honor Comparative Religion class for seniors (it compares/contrasts/analyzes the history of multiple religions) -- and it does typically count since it is an anlytical class. Suggest you check the websites of colleges you are considering.
