If you have been treated in a psychiatric hospital for suicide/depression/etc, can medical schools find out when you apply? I know there are HIPAA laws but would that student be protected?

The student has since then been in treatment, on the right meds, and very healthy.

I also posted this in the premed forum.

I don’t know if they can, but I somehow doubt it. I can not see why they would bother looking in the first place and even if they do find out as long as the person has been healthy for a considerable amount of time, what difference does it make? I have myself been in treatment for the same things, but I was fortunate enough to stay at home, although I was put on sick leave for 2 out of my 4 IB semesters. This is not something that I hide from the schools that Im applying to, although it is hardly the focus of my applications, I do tell them about this, how it has affected my school work, what I learnt from recovering as well as providing a statement from my doctor that I am now healthy as can be.
