Question regarding Orientation and First "Pass Time"

Hey guys, first off, I live in Connecticut so I don't think Ill be going to orientation this summer. And to my understanding, if you sign up for orientation, your first "pass time" on GOLD will be during the dates of the orientation you signed up for. I'm also under the impression that those who go to earlier orientation have more options and classes to choose from, and those who go late/don't go at all have a little disadvantage (even though everyone on CC says you don't).

My question is if I sign up for orientation, and make the payment, will I be given a pass time during the date of my orientation even if I don't physically go. I know it seems weird, but I'm seriously considering this option just so I can sign up for classes earlier. Anyone know if you can do this, or have done it. Thanks

You are incorrect in believing that those who go to an earlier orientation have a better chance of getting into a class. They plan it out so that there are a certain amount of spots in each class per orientation, so it doesn’t matter which you go to.

The way orientation works is that there are 3 academic advising sessions, and during the third, you and everybody in your group (~15 people) sign up for classes. Now, if you can figure out when there’s an orientation and exactly what time the 3rd academic advising session is, then you can sign up on GOLD from your home. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until UCSB instructs you further on what to do.

This is off-topic, but I grew up in CT and I’m going to UCSB too! Yay!

adding to what drahumada said: your posting this this late indicates that you have not yet signed up for orientation… i had to advise one of my close friends to sign up a week ago and they ended up slotted with the second to last date, so if you WERE to sign up now, you would not be able to sign up for the earlier dates because they are filled…

Besides, even with orientation dates, the classes to choose from aren’t great. All of the rest of ucsb has had pass 1 and I think 2 already so the freshman are stuck with a limited amount of classes to begin with.

Thanks for all your responses guys, I guess I’m a little worried about what I’m gonna end up with. But from what you guys said, I’m just going to be patient and wait it out until September.

Well even with the limited amount of classes, ucsb will make sure that you have atleast 12 units so that you can be a “full time” student. It’s not super important what you take in your first quarter anyway; there’s plenty more time to meet your ge’s and major requirements. At orientation we were encouraged to take any class that sounded interesting. A lot of people signed up for a class titled “dinosaurs”

i want to take dinosaurs. lol

i want to know what the hell im going to do as a transfer. im basically going to wait and see, but i need to take upper division classes! they have to be full, or very close to.

My son took dinosaurs and I laughed and asked if he hadn’t already taken it in second grade but he said it was one of the best he’s had so far!

are there surfing classes? that would be dope

Actually, yes. It’s listed on gold under “es 1”

sweeet. dude. brah.

What if you don’t sign-up for orientation at all, would you still be able to register for classes?

you have to go to orientation. its part of your steps of enrollment

actually, no, you dont HAVE to go to orientation, it says on the orientation site that about 95% of freshmen admits do go though. on the GOLD website once you log in, you’ll be able to see your 2nd and 3rd pass times (they’ll be way late) and you’ll be able to register then.

Stopaz, I don’t see the surfing class on gold in any of the quarters. What’s the course ID for it?
