I am a high school student in the State of New Jersey. However, my parents pay taxes to the State of New York. Thus, am I a resident of New York or New Jersey? I applied to several colleges as resident of New Jersey, but I am unsure if it is legal for me to receive in-state tuitions for public universities in New Jersey. Plus, I am trying to see if I can get any scholarships through Fordham but most are for New York State residence, and I am unsure if I am eligible for those scholarships Please help!
Where you live, assuming you live with your parents usually determines “residency”.
Do your parents own a summer home or work in NY? You weren’t very clear, Why do they pay taxes to NY?
If your parents are paying taxes for NY, they either work in NY or own some property.
I think if you are an independent student, living in NJ, you are a resident of NJ for college admission purposes. If you are a dependent student, and your parents live in NY and pay taxes as NY residents, then, you are a NY resident for college admission purposes. Where you go to high school is irrelevant. If you are to be eligible for NY Excelsior free-tuition program for CUNY and SUNY, I think, you have to be a resident of NY more than on year.
