Question regarding to financial aid - will greatly appreciate your answers

Hello, I'm admitted as an out of state student to the University of Maryland. University of Maryland gave me roughly only about 10k every year on need based grants, and I was not offered any merit based scholarships. So, if I choose to attend University of Maryland then I am required to pay about 24 k every year. My question is that is it possible for UMD to offer me scholarships if I get a high GPA in my first year? Thank you! Your answer would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and, I think I submitted my fafsa late, so would that be part of the reason I received so little aid? and my family is considered as low income.

I don’t know the answer to your question but how did you find out your fin aid award? My daughter didn’t receive any package in the mail.

i found out online, they sent me an email with a link to their site

acsvcr, are you able to log in at [University of Maryland | Testudo | Financials | Financial Aid Status](http://www.testudo.umd.edu/apps/fastat/)?

It depends on your major. Some colleges or majors have their own process for applying for scholarships for your soph+ year, such as CMPS. For a reality check, you should assume you won’t get more, and then be happy if you do. UMD does not necessarily cover the COA with their financial aid (especially for the add’l $$ that out-of-state tuition is)…and you should not assume that you can (or should) get loans to pay that difference.
