I got into UMD-College Park's honors college but did not receive a scholarship at all! I am in-state though so it is cheaper than most, but I was still a bit hurt that I did not receive anything as I am a 4.0 student with many activities and a 1400 SAT and 32 ACT

Is UMD that good that they don't need to offer very many scholarships to their best students? Is it difficult to receive a scholarship?

Thanks

My son had a 1350 SAT (CR-Math) back in 2003, and a 3.4 GPA He didn’t get accepted to UMD! We are still perplexed about that!

Here are the stats for Maryland:

A 1400 SAT is around 75th percentile for Maryland, so no it’s not surprising, since they are giving merit aid at 80th percentile and above.

UMCP also knows the schools in the state, so if you are not at one of the more competitive schools that could be a factor. Did you take the most difficult classes offered at your school?

Three years ago, a neighbor girl with close to a 4.0 got the January entry program. I do not know what her scores were.

I only know a few kids who have gotten money at Maryland. It is not the most generous of Maryland schools.

I attend a private school which has a good reputation arounf Baltimore and have taken 7 AP classes and all honors so I think I am pretty competitve.

That is interesting about the top 80th percentile. I did not know that.

You have an excellent academic record and you should be proud of it. UMd just doesn’t give out a lot of merit aid.

Thanks, its hard to wrap my head around but I guess there is nothing I can do about it. Wish they did give out more but I guess it just means that umd is becoming a more competitive school.
