Question regarding transferring

Hello, I have a question regarding transfer to UCLA.

I applied to UCLA for the fall semester, as a Computer Science Major. I currently have a 3.34 gpa, will have completed my IGETC, and I will have completed all of the required major preparation courses, except for one class. It is Differential Equations. I will be taking Linear Algebra this semester, with the hope of taking Differential Equations the following semester, while I’m at whatever college I have been accepted to. My question is will this one incomplete class automatically prevent me from being accepted or is it possible that I can complete the class while taking courses at whatever school I get accepted to? I’m enrolled in Differential Equations as well, but I’m taking 4 other difficult classes, and I really don’t want to take it this semester.

Thank you for your help.

This may help you calibrate your sense of your chances. According to https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm#SEAS in 2014 UCLA CS had 641 applicants and took 38 (6%). Average admitted GPA was 3.92

If it says required on ASSIST, you have to take it.

As mikemac said, a 3.34 CS admit is unlikely given those stats.

^^ This is a statement from their website. I’m going to take the class, I just wanted to know if I could take it after I’ve been admitted and if not taking it would affect my chances?

“Applicants should complete ALL the required preparatory courses. Applicants who are lacking 2 or more of these courses are unlikely to be admitted.”

Here it the deal. You probably should take it, however your GPA is what is holding you back, not missing that specific class. So, you could take the class and still not get in, which means you’ve taken a tougher course load for no reason.

Did you apply to any other UCs that have it as a pre req?

I’ve applied to UCI & UCR as well. UCI requires Cal1 & Cal2, UCR requires Cal1-Cal3

and diff equations is Cal 3?

Linear Algebra is after Cal 3. And Differential Equations is after Linear Algebra, but they can be taken together.

So you’ve completed UCI and UCR’s requirements?

Ultimately it depends on how you want to spend your semester. Knowing that UCLA is unlikely, do you still feel the need to take Diff Equations?

No, I don’t. I just dropped it. If I get into UCLA, I’m just going to try my best to work something out and hope to be able to take it while I’m there.

I think that is a very good plan.
