How many in each ILC residence, what are the major differences. How hard to get into either one? Thanks.

I believe Tierney may house around 100 to 120 Freshaman. Queens Court (where I lived freshman year), has around 150. The Tierney ILC (called Manresa I belive) is brand new. This incoming freshman class will be the first to be able to live in Tienrey as an ILC, before it has just been a freshman dorm. I had a friend on the advisory board of Manresa, and from what he told me, its going to be very cool. The community will be very close knit, some of the professors will even live in the dorm. Which, to me, is pretty cool. All the profs I've had at Fordham are amazing. I have yet to be disappointed. Manresa is the garden where God revealed his plan to St. Ignatius. So, I'm guessing that the whole "theme" of that community will be very Ignatian geared (Men and Women for others etc.)

Queens Court, though, has been a resedential college for over 20 years now, and has fostered almost all the leaders in the Fordham community. Queens Court is a great place, amazing dorm, and stellar community. I loved every minute I was there. It was a little strange for me to think that I had a priest living down the hall, and a nun living below me. But I was presently suprised at how accomidating and interesting they both were. Queens Court has a lot of programming and a lot of activites for everyone to do. It is a great place for intellectual and driven students to interact.

I think that in a few years Queens Court will have some competition form Manresa. If I were choosing over again, it would be a difficult decision. (Tierney has A/C and QC doesn't!). Since this is the first year, it may be a little rocky, but with all the planning that has gone into the Manresa program, I would imagine that it will run very smoothly. Both are great opportunities for any freshman.

Thanks. That is a big help. How about the different programming at each? Or are they the same?

I can't really speak much to the Manresa programs, but what I can tell you is that Tierney will have about an equal budget as Queens Court, with less residents. Also, the Queens Court budget is already vastly larger than any other freshman dorm.

As for the Queens Court programs, their is so many I cannot even begin to list them all. It seemed during the year like all the RAs were having a competition to see which one could have the most programs. Specifically, here are the main ones. Knight Court, which happens monday thru thrusday at 10:00pm, is a time for each of the QC residents to show a talent, or speak to a certain experience they had. All the residents (not mandatory everyday, but most show up anyways) gather in Bishop's Lounge (the main study area of QC), and listen to a fellow resident. It's a great way to learn something about someone that you would have never expected. I know that Knight Court broke many of my preconceptions about many people. Also, every Sunday QC has bagel brunch, which was my favorite thing all year. Basically, from 10:00am to 1:00pm every sunday there are free bagels, cream cheese, jelly, orange juice, coffee, and newspapers for the residents in Bishop's Lounge. There are also many other random programs throughout the year (broadway shows, dinners, free museum tickets, even a coney island walk!). If you have anymore questions let me know.

Thanks. My D says she heard anecdotally on facebook that QC is sort of a quiet place....where serious students can study. That is a good thing and she definitely is a serious study person and doesnt like a lot of distraction, but on the other hand, she says she wants a life in college....she does not drink or smoke or "party" but simply wants a healthy social life. She has special talent (music) and is a gifted painter as well, all the while being a VERY strong student in the traditional liberal arts....but even got an A in a very difficult Chemistry course. She just doesnt want to be bored and lonely while kids in other dorms have a healthy social life.

And if Tierney will have the same budget but fewer students, that obviously means more money to spend per student...and thus implies a better program.

True?

I can assure you that there is a very very healthy social life in Queens Court. While there are those that do go out and 'party,' there is so much to get invovled with that doesn't involve those endeavors. There is always something going on during the week, and the weekend. Also, the dorm is fairly studious. Sometimes though, studying in Bishops Lounge can get a little annoing. Alot of people walk through it and some can be noisy. But if they notice you're studying, then they will generally pipe down. Also, the Walsh Library is absolutley amazing. If ever your daughter finds she can't study in QC, go to the library. It's ranked the 5th best library in the nation. It's the best place on campus to study.

I don't know if the higher amount of money per student means that they will have better programs. That may be true, but I can't be certain. It's hard to beat Queens Court. Sister Ann, the house master, has that place running like clock work. She's great, and Queens Court is considered the preminent freshman dorm. Whatever the case may be, both dorms will have great programs, Queens Court, though, has an established image on campus. (Also, Queens Court is pretty competitive to get into, if your D does decide on QC, you should probably FedEx the letter of intent that Sister Ann will ask her to write, just to secure a space).

Thanks...much obliged. The Letter of Intent, does it have a specific topic and length?

The letter doesn't have a specific length. All it asks, or rather Sister Ann asks, is that you explain why you want to be a part of Queens Court Residential College. You should think about this and try and give a good reason. Sister Ann has turned down her fair share of applicants just because she didn't believe them. At least that's what she told us on the first day. Who knows if she was embelishing. Also, somewhere in the letter you have to explicitly state that "Alcohol and Drugs will have no part in my life at Queens Court or Fordham University." It isn't a difficult task. Just do some research on Fordham and Queens Court, try and impress her a little bit and you'll do fine.

Thanks. The pledge is no problem.

Can freshman live in Hughes? Hughes is the one with all the quads, right?

Yes, Hughes hall is a Freshman only dorm. And yes, it is comprised completely of quads.

if you request hughes, will you probably get it?
