Question. What should I do ?

Ok so i'm applying for UCF, it's my number one choice.
Test scores are REALLY low (mainly my math)
Gpa is really high 4.8 W ; 3.6 UW
4.0 College/dual enrollment GPA
VERY GOOD grade trend. Went from mainly A's B's and C's in Freshman and Sophomore yrs to Straight a's in Junior and Senior yrs with Ap's and dual enrollment

Anyways, I'm pretty sure I'll be deferred for whatever term I apply for- but ideally I want to be accepted for fall. So I was wondering which term I should apply for because I've been told that if you apply for fall, UCF considers the applicant for both summer and fall term, so if they wanted to accept me for summer they would just say so. My thing is I just don't want to be FLAT OUT denied for fall when I'm pretty sure they'll at least consider or defer me for summer. I'm waiting on my October SAT scores (that come out Thursday) but I'm not sure if my math score will get any better which is the only thing I really NEED to bring up. So what do you think I should do? Apply for Summer, or apply for Fall- hoping they don't reject me, but defer me ?
Ughh sorry if it makes no sense.

Ohh and yes I'm embarrassed about my test scores. But what the heck. I SUCK at math (not so much in math classes anymore though.)It was my first try. No prep or knowledge about how to take the SAT.
350 math, 560 CR, 520 W :(
Oh well.

Any comments, tips or insights are appreciated ! Thanks ! :)

Mayday,
I worried over this very thing, kept reading these boards because my s has lopsided SATs and when I told him I’d read he should apply for summer and wait until his Oct SATs are back to apply, his response was “Too bad I’ve already sent it” because his counselor told him to apply for what he wanted (fall) and if he’s deferred he may be offered summer.

He didn’t need me at all.

The counselor also said they very rarely flat out deny because of standardized scores, he’ll be risky because of his lower GPA. I don’t know, but I’d say let UCF know this is your first choice, explain the low SAT score, which he did far better than I could have suggested, and get your app in before November because everybody is flooding apps with UF’s deadline looming.

I really hope you get in. I do think “wanting it” more than the flood of apps plays a big part. Just hope it’s big enough. :)

Thanks. Yeah that’s what the lady said when I called today .She said “apply for the term you want.” The problem is, things don’t always work out the way you want ya know? And I’d much rather get it than not get in at all and wonder if I should have applied to summer. But I think I’m just going to apply for fall and leave it in God’s hands. I can’t take the stress ! lol
THANK YOU :)

The other thing my son pointed out is that Bright Futures doesn’t cover summer and since both of my other kids are costing me a fortune this summer, he can’t afford summer unless it’s his only option.

I know for certain UF and FSU do not consider term starting as a factor for admission but select the top applicants and I would bet UCF has gone to this strategy too.

He really wants the summer off because he’s been busting his rear this year to get A’s in his AP math classes. There’s SO much pressure Senior year, and it’s not even halfway through. He just wanted to get the app IN and stop worrying about “what if?” If he gets deferred, he’ll apply to backups. There’s still plenty of time.

Really bright futures doesn’t cover summer? crap. Then I have to go fall term. Hahaha thanks . And because of my test scores I don’t think I have any “backups” but St. Leo and maybe University of Tampa; none of which I want to go to. If I get into St. leo I most likely won’t go, but maybe to UT. And I know exactly what you’re talking about with the pressure, I’m making extra sure to make straight A’s in my regular, honor,ap,and dual enrollment classes. Not that I wouldn’t/didn’t before, but once again my test scores are crap so everything else needs to be pristine. I’m also on the same page with just getting the apps in. I can’t worry anymore lol.
Thanks.

^^Just as a heads up, you have to complete one summer session at some point if you go to a state university and Bright Futures doesn’t pay for it. Just something to be prepared for! So if you have to go this summer, you can think of it as getting your one summer over with and out of the way.

You only have to complete a summer if you don’t have 9 hours of AP exam credit or a combination of AP/dual enrollment/clep credit equal to 9 hours. And, different Fl universities are different how they handle that: UF and UNF say you must have all 9 hours or you have to start from scratch and take a summer. UCF allows you to count a portion towards that 9 if that’s all you have, and you just have to complete the remaining. Don’t know about FSU or USF.

zebes

Thanks. And by the time I graduate I’ll have 21 hours. I currently have nine hours and will have 15 by the end of December. Judging by what you guys said, I prob. wont have to .
Thanks

MayDay: if you haven’t already done so, you may want to think of applying to FAU and Gulf Coast as you should have guaranteed admission based on your GPA. My daughter was denied UCF last year and choose FAU. Based on exposure to this school, I can easily recommend it. The campus is growing, the stadium is being built and it’s minutes from the beach! Don’t know as much about Gulf Coast other than it’s much newer and has very nice dorms. But the kids that are from the west coast who attended FAU with my D said it’s somewhat boring there.

Thanks for the info! Do you know where I can find info . about guaranteed admission based on my GPA? Thanks !

Oh and if anyone is curious, as I suspected, my score didn’t go up much. I thought I BEASTED the CR but I went down 30 points. Crazy. But I went up by 10 in math, and 20 in W with an 8 on the essay which is the same essay score that I got before. So super scored it’s
560 CR 360 M 540 W , 8 essay = FAIL
:/

MayDay: there’s no actual “guarantee” like the Florida Top 20; but these schools are less competitive than UCF. You may want to call their admissions to determine incoming class average and of course check them out. Nobody likes to spend $$ for application if its not necessary. Also, suggest trying ACT vs. SAT - all FL schools accept equal to SAT. ACT doesn’t count wrong answers (so you can actually Xmas tree any that you’ve not completed in hope of choosing right), plus is a more straight forward knowledge test vs. SAT which is more reasoning.

FAU is definitely more competitive than FGCU. FIU and FGCU are the easiest schools to get into in Florida.

FAU is more competitive than FGCU but FIU is not one of the easiest to get into. They were pretty selective from what I read.

FGCU is too young and too small to be in that position.

I don’t think they would automatically reject a student due to test scores if the GPA is that high. Have you tried taking the ACT?

MayDay, keep your hopes up!!! Try taking the ACT and keep on going at it till you reach a good score. From what I remember, I think the Math portion on the ACT was easier than the SAT. Keep on trying hard and your work will pay off. Sign up for the next ACT! And if you’re any good at writing or just critical reading, I think it was, it could really boost up that final ACT score. Try taking some practice tests before you take the real thing. I honestly believe you can do this!

I think they will admit you for summer term if you try really hard to bring your scores up. Summer is not all that bad, trust me. You should have 2 schools as a back-up plan, but don’t be too pessimistic about UCF just yet.

Last but not least, if you apply for fall and don’t meet the requirements, they will consider you for summer. Right now, I’d honestly just focus on trying to get in summer term. Remember to prep for the ACT and don’t just go in the testing room not knowing how it works. Time management is key on the ACT.

We need more hard working students like you at UCF! Good luck and go knights!

Awee Thanks  And yeah I definitely will not give up without trying my best. The problem is there are no “back up schools” for me that I would actually go to. I just don’t see why I would leave my family to go to some private school or somewhere that I think I won’t be happy at. I got accepted into ST. Leo yesterday, but I don’t even know why I applied. I didn’t even send everything in haha. But my thing is like I said I don’t want to go to a school just because I don’t want to go to community college, but I really fear if I don’t get into the schools I want that I will. I don’t understand why I would continue to work hard either if I might end up going there. Arghh. But you really lifted my spirits. THANK YOU (:

P.s I applied for fall ( I know, dumb move), do you think I should send in the reactivation form?

Mayday, you’ll get in for sure. I have many friends with much lower stats than you and they recieved acceptance to the Fall term. Don’t worry about the reactivation form. WORST case scernario is the defer you to the summer. I’m pretty sure you will be fine though.

What? Really? Idk I’m still ****ing my pants but let’s hope!

Yep! I can see them maybe telling you to try again on your SAT’s but your GPA just seems to good to pass up. There are a lot of huge SAT scores and low GPA’s (like myself) and you better believe that colleges know people are constantly are getting coached on how to do better on the SAT’s. With scores going up and GPA’s not going anywhere, I think the SAT is slowly using value. I think you are safe.

Yeah I know. I wish I could get a tutor :/
