question...

i was accepted to mcgill and am now researching phone services. i want to be able to call back home (Florida) and also around Canada without having to pay loads of money. does anyone have any advice as to what phone company would work best for me?

get a cell phone, and talk to whatever company about north american minutes.

did the verizon "north american" plan my first year. waste of money, and you'll just end up jacking up the bills for all your friends who have to call you internationally. I'd recommend getting a montreal number (Rogers, Fido), then using skype to make calls back home. There are also some really cheap calling cards available.

Actually, I'm stupid. Justatest is beyond right, except if you make sure you plan has free-incoming, you can just text whom-ever back home, and let them call you. I personally use skype to talk to family/friends back home.

I don't have a need to call people outside of the 514 (montreal area code), so you might have to talk to a phone rep about that.

Check out Fido--At least this past year, it has had deals that are superior to other Canadian providers--I don't know if Verizon still makes its North American plan available. My son has Fido and it's been fine; It allows you to add minutes to call the US for relatively small fees, and of course, calls in Canada, especially within 514 which will be the bulk of your calls, are covered

What's "skype"? Sorry if that's a stupid question.

Wiki on Skype
Skype webpage

It allows you to call other people's phone via an internet connection. It used to be free, but not anymore :(. It's still cheaper than long-distance.

No Problem.

Skype is an free computer application available for Mac or Windows that allows you to call any phone anywhere. There is a small charge for these calls, however calling other people with this application installed on their computer is completely free. Webcam chat is also free and available.

S has a phone from fido for local calls. When he calls home, he dials a local Montreal number and somehow it rings in our house. I don't know how they did it but I'll ask S and H if you're interested.
