Questions about APEA

I am hoping to go to APEA this summer and I'm wondering if anyone can give me feedback about some of the courses:
- 15-121 Introduction to Data Structures
- 18-100 Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering - This is my first choice, but I'm wondering if it is a killer and what course would go with it.
- 33-101 Science and Science Fiction
- 36-201 Statistical Reasoning and Practice
- 57-337 Sound Recording - Could a person with no musical talent and no ability to read music, but very strong computer and math skills survive in this course?
Besides the specific questions I put next to some courses, I'm wondering if anyone has any general thoughts about these courses or about anything else about APEA. Finally, is it possible under any circumstances to take 15-121 and 18-100 together? Thanks for your guy's help

15-121 Introduction to Data Structures - Not bad at all provided you have some Java experience. You’ll probably have it with McElfresh who is the most badass little man in existence.

18-100 Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering - Never taken it but everyone complains about its difficulty, so it has a “reputation.”

33-101 Science and Science Fiction - Has a rep for being a fun course. Never taken it. It’s level 101, so it’ll probably just be exploratory and interesting.

36-201 Statistical Reasoning and Practice - Super easy. The professor dances when people’s phones go off in lecture and always wears the same outfit every day. On top of that, I’ve never had a math teacher who taught the material as clearly as he does. It’s incredibly easy to learn.

57-337 - I don’t know if you need to for APEA, but for regular students, they recommend musical background. I wanted to take the course this semester but couldn’t get in (it’s very small with restrictions to major). So I don’t think you would be good to go if you have no musical background.

Thank you very much. Your advice is really helpful.

I am planning on taking APEA this summer, 2012
I want to know if this program helps raise the chances for you get into CMU?

This is what I just posted in the post about Early Action vs. Early Decision.
If you can afford to take APEA - you have over 90% chance of getting into CMU if you get good grades at CMU.
You can also apply for scholarships if you’re a URM - apply through the diversity summer program. Same thing.

All but one of my friends who went to APEA was admitted. The only guy who didn’t get admitted got a C in a course.

Early admission and Early Action are two different things. The only Early Action CMU offers is for APEA-- non-binding, and you can apply other places.

If you do well in summer courses and have a great high school record – you’re in!

Pick your summer classes wisely-- not taking two weeders!
I took ECE and nearly died-- but got an A. I also took 123 – which was intro to C-- but that was replaced in our new curriculum. So it didn’t really help me with anything other than relearning C in a more formal setting.

If you have $7000 for summer classes-- take it and you have an excellent shot at CMU - seems from the anecdotes 99% admit rate.

What if I got a B in ece? ended with an 89.7. bleh.

The curve is much lower than that!

You’ll get 50s and 60s on homeworks and that might even get you an A! ECE is a weeder class and you should not expect to get 90s on anything this summer in that class. 80s are an A and a tough shot at that!

If you get two Bs at APEA – you’re on the margin.

Aim for at aleast one A.

Are you a URM or female?

Yea I got 2 Bs  my ece grade with no curve was an 82ish. With the curve it went up to a 89.7. I got high Bs on 2 tests and a pretty bad grade on the first one x.x; As on everything else (hw and labs)

I was taking their calculus class but it was incredibly boring and I didn’t want an easy A so…i decided to take ece and deal with 2 Bs . (i was also taking cs so my schedule was pretty busy compared to most students)

I’m a female :3

thanks for your reply, so your basically saying that if i take this apea course ([AP/EA Courses - Carnegie Mellon offers Courses for College Credit](http://www.cmu.edu/enrollment/pre-college/apea.html))

and get good grades, i have a set chance into getting into CMU?

Also im planning on going into the computer science program from cmu, so what classes should i take in APEA that will put me in the right direction?

Does anyone know if I can apply through both regular APEA and SAMS (Programs for Diversity)? I tried searching online about it to no avail.

Hi chewy
I’m hispanic- I applied through SAMS and made it clear in my application I was interested in APEA. About a 2-3 maybe go that route if you’re already overqualified for SAMS. SAMS is a great program . But if your record indicates you can tackle the classes, then that’s the way to go in your application.
Talk to the diversity recruitment adcoms about this.

Good luck

To the other poster-- if you got two Bs and you’re a female, good shot!

So you guys have probably all taken the courses by now. Can I have some info on the focus and difficulty of the following courses? I’m thinking of applying AE to CMU SCS.
15-112 Fundamentals of Programming and Computer Science: I have some basic experience with the Python language, but not much beyond that. I plan to take some online courses before summer.

18-100 Intro to Electrical and Computer Engineering: This course seems to have a “reputation” for difficulty but it seems interesting

27-052 Intro to Nanoscience and Technology: Seems interesting

51-260 Design Fundamentals: Sounds very interesting. I have some artistic talent and interest (piano, drawing), and I was wondering how much of a blend this course is with technology and the arts. Description is pretty vague.

33-107 Physics for Engineering Students II [Electricity and Magnetism]: I’m taking a physics honors class in HS that seems to have covered nearly all the mechanical aspects talked about in the Physics I [Mechanical]. Will I be fine in this class with no AP physics taken? I will have finished AP Calculus BC by then.

Hi :)

Can I have some info on the rigor, difficulty, and quality of the following courses in the APEA? I’m thinking of applying to…

51-260 Design Fundamentals

79-104E Global Histories: The History of Capitalism

80-100E Introduction to Philosophy

85-241E Social Psychology

Thank you in advance :)

Don’t take ece intro. Save this for freshman year. This is where you will meet all of the other kids in your major and find a good study group. If you take it in the summer you will miss out on that.

For people going this year (2015) I made a meet-up page! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university/1771630-people-accepted-into-carnegie-mellon-pre-college-ap-ea-meet-up-2015.html?new=1
