Greetings, I am quite new to this I have been reading posts but have never before posted anything. I shall be a freshman at UCLA this upcoming Fall and am trying to pick classes for my schedule. I have a few questions if anyone may help me.

I have passed the AP Calculus AB test. Is that worth Anything as an engineering major? Also would any other tests give me any useful credit? Like Physics Statistics and a lot of history social science classes?

If it is not worth anything does that mean I cannot take Physics until I finish the Math 31 series?

This is what I think I might take if I can't take Physics is it alright?
Math31A
Chem20A
Eng87
ComSci31

I thank you for your time and help!!!

Does this apply for everyone including Engineering Majors?! When I called they told me I still have to take the Math Diagnostic Test although I got a 5 in AB!

Your major doesn’t matter. You don’t have to take the Diagnostic test.

Most freshman don’t take Physics 1A until Winter Quarter, so not taking it in the fall isn’t a big deal

Thank You thank You. I shall call again because they said that I had to take the test unless I got a five on BC

Who are you calling? The Math department policy is clearly stated on its website.

Last year, and they’ll tell you again in orientation. Getting a 5 In Calc AB, gives you the choice of not having to take the math diagnostic test during orientation and you can skip to Math 31B. However, if you chose to take the math diagnostic test you’ll have to go by w/e score you got even if you got a 5. You CAN’T Accept the course credit from calc AP AP test and take Math 31A(the class that you skipped, and what people normally start out with).

On the other hand, if you took the CALC BC test then getting 5 can get you waived out of both math 31a and math 31b, and you can start on Math 32A(multi variable calculus). Normally, people don’t take physics till winter quarter anyways… and for engineering majors they revised the requirements for us or something. [Curricular Requirements & Department Information — UCLA Engineering Office of Academic and Student Affairs](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/undergraduates/curricular-requirements-department-information) Tells you in Red.

I took stats AP and it ended up just counting for units, as did my Econ AP. I’m pretty sure thats what happens with most of the History APs for engineering majors. But don’t worry, you spend like an hour or so doing schedule planning with your counselors during your orientation, its pretty detailed and they’ll tell you how much credit you can get from your APs and such.

Your class schedule seems alright. I dont know what major you in, but since your taking CS31, I’m going to assume your either, CS, CSE, or EE. It seems like an ok schedule? But Chem was pretty difficult for my friends since Baugh teaches it, but his curve saves majority of the class. So as long as you do average i guess you should be fine. (Don’t completely know since i waived out of chem 20A with my chem AP test credit). I don’t know whats eng87. If you got a 5 on CALC AB test, i’m pretty sure Math 31A will not be difficult for you, unless you get unlucky and have alot of proofs on your exams.

On a side note, I skipped out of Math 31a and into math 31b by not taking the math diagnostic test, cause I didn’t want to be too behind. I learned through schedule planning for the future, that its good to be ahead in the math series, since they were prereqs for some EE classes I needed to take. I’m already ahead one quarter/class… but compared to what would be ideal, I’m behind by a quarter/class

is it true baugh is not teaching chem 20A this fall?

he’s teaching 20AH

^^^All engineers have to take CS31
I wouldn’t recommend taking four classes your first quarter, but it’s definitely not impossible.

True, all engineers do have to take cs31, but someone who takes CS31 in the fall MUST be CS, EE, or CSE. It was restricted during my orientation to those 3 majors. And if your not one of those three, i wouldn’t recommend taking it in Fall since it will be loaded with at least CS and CSE majors, since they will need cs31 to continue through the other cs courses.

Thank you all for your help!
So if I take the test I can’t skip Math 31A anymore?! And according to a previous post they now allow enrollment in Physics with concurrent enrollment in Math 31B if I skip into that class and replace Com Sci with Physics would it be more reasonable?! Well I was just interested on Com Sci and prob making it my Tech Breadth! I am am Aerospace major though.

You can take the test and still skip out of Math31A I think if you test high enough. Not exactly sure, but don’t worry they dedicate a section of your day to explain it to you. Haha i guess if they offer it you could do that, But it would be quite alot for your first quarter, Math 31B, chem 20A, and physics 1a and another class. Seems much. And for cs31, you won’t be able to get the class unless you added in during orientation since your aerospace.

Thank You WorriedJrgirl well emailed the math department and they directed me to the page that provides AP Credit info.by the school of Engineering and it says I can’t skip out of the class. Darn it it is quite confusing! Thank You though for your help thus far!!! I shall just take the test and see what happens… Darn it I am.quite confused I just don’t wanna mess up and fall behind!

They’ll cover all the stuff during orientation so you don’t really need to worry about it. ;]

Thanks alot for your help I can’t wait for orientation!!! I shall have alot of questions but you have really helped me!!! =D
