I'm going to be a freshman this fall and am looking at the classes I am going to be taking before I attend my spop so I have an idea of what I want my schedule to be, but am really confused. What is the difference between lecture seminars discussion and labs and all the different "class types?" I need to take chemistry 1a but do I need to enroll in a lecture lab AND discussion?I am going in as undecided/undeclared and then applying to the nursing program if that makes things any different. Hopefully someone can help me out.
Thanks!

What you need to enroll in depends on the class. Most large introductory lecture courses such as chem 1a require concurrent enrollment into the corresponding discussion, in fact, you will automatically be dropped from lecture if you don’t sign up for a discussion. And if you drop the discussion you will also be dropped from the lecture. There is no lab associated with chem 1a, unless you are taking honors. Any class that has a discussion listed below the lecture likely has mandatory discussion enrollment.

As for the difference, lectures are typically much larger (hundreds of students) while discussion are much smaller (around 20-60 usually).

Some labs you can take separately from the associated lecture (for example, physics 3b and physics 3b lab). If a lab has a lab lecture associated it (different from a class lecture) then you must enroll in both too.

What a ‘seminar’ is varies depending on the class. Some of them are very informal Pass/No pass that you can take if you are interested, and some are only for a certain major to give them all the same background knowledge etc.

hopefully this didn’t confuse you even more :)
