Questions about ECE

I was admitted into CIT but waitlisted for ECE. Is this a common occurrence? What are the chances that I am ultimately admitted to ECE? Would it be possible for me to take classes within the electrical engineering department and ultimately transfer after the first semester/first year? Thanks for any responses in advance.

Yes. You will have the opportunity to take Intro to ECE and 15-112 (The programming class co-requisite to intro to ECE) and if you do well, you will be permitted to go for ECE. No one who has done well in the courses listed above has been denied to pursue ECE as a major.

In CIT you will be required to take two Intro to … courses. You don’t even declare major until late in the spring term. My S planned to do ChemE but when he took the Intro to ECE course he loved it. He then decided to declare ECE. The only thing you have to do is do very well in the Intro course. Good Luck.

If it is so easy to switch into ECE, then why was I denied entry into the ECE program in the first place?

To make sure they have room for everyone. Not everyone who gets admitted for ECE off the bat actually attends CMU…

Same thing happened to me…so getting into ECE isn’t a problem?

No. Just do well. But mind you, intro to ECE is a weeder course. The professors will not curve the class or anything to make your grade look nice. If you fall behind, you are screwed.

Kosbie for 15-112 also goes out of his way to make sure you understand CS is tough. He is not a nice guy (at the same time he is a “nice” guy and good teacher, if it makes sense)
