Questions about ED and ID, from a junior.

I'm a junior in high school right now, which pretty much means that I'm in a crazed state of anxiety when it comes to grades and future college applications. Rice is definitely my first choice - it will be a reach for me due to some rather pathetic grades in my freshman/sophomore years. But I'll worry about that later.

For ED, does the college ever see your mid-year report?
I'm considering the option of applying ED to Rice...but I really want them to see my improvement (hopefully) in my senior year (5 APs, continuing with Academic Decathlon). So I was just wondering about that - it might be a better choice for me to apply ID, but I had to make sure.

All applicants are required to submit a mid-year report. However, it won't help you to get admitted ED since the decision is made before your mid-year report is available. You might be better off applying ID since they'll be considering your mid-year grades as part of the application. You should try to plan an overnight visit (next fall) and an interview to demonstrate your interest and also to give you the chance to make sure Rice is what you really want.

I was in the exact same situation you were when applying to college this year, and on advice of my school's very competent college counselor I applied RD everywhere. But when filling out the Rice supplement I added a little note at the end saying "For financial and academic (I wanted colleges to have my first trimester grades) reasons I elected not to apply anywhere early decision or early action. That being said, I would like to make it blatantly clear that Rice is my first choice to attend college at next fall."

Hopefully they'll take my word for it.

Isn't ID more competitive, though? I don't know; I really want to go to Rice. I suppose I could just not apply for ED anywhere and take a shot at ID...

ID has a higher acceptance rate than RD so it's probably your best bet. Also, there's no advantage to applying RD. ID is nonbinding, so you don't have to make a commitment if you're accepted.

i really hope you didn't literally put "to attend college at".

does the mid year report make a difference in admissions? I dont think so.

Also, i think they use to confirm admissions. Like if you are sortlisted, then they check your midtyear report to confirm that you are performing the same
