Questions about GETTING INTO MIT

Hi all

I am from India and am planning to apply to MIT in 2007. From what i have seen on CC it seems to me that a 2200+ in sat and a good research involvement is necessary to get into MIT. As in the case of Research, i have done a few in Human Computer Interaction and Computer Vision.

Q.1. Should i get my research paper reviwed by Proffesor at IIT or BITS.

Secondly It seems that Kids who get into Intel Science fair stand at a good Chance. I was Selecetd for IntelScience fair in India at National level, But it was in Grade 9. I was also selected in various children Science Congres (State Level) but they were in Grade 6,7,8,9,. After it i was not allowed as you could participate only 4 times.

Q.2. Will the fact that my Intel science fair was in Grade 9 adversely affect my chances.

Q.3. If i take Further Mathematics in my A levels will it boost my chances significantly.

Waiting for your Reply

Bye

Can Someone answer these questions

Hi,
I read you queries about MIT. I think I can answer your queries about MIT to a large extent.
Firstly a score of 2200+ is a good way to demonstrate your competence. But that doesnot mean that you have to get that much any score above 2000 would do. So dont try so hard.

But yes, it is highly essential that you show high level of research involvement before you apply. You can get them reviewed by BITS or IIT Prof's. It adds a lot of weightage. But even if you are unable to do so just send you research papers as annexures to the university. The admission's officer who is usually Matt Mc Gann would forward it to the concerned department for review.

The Intel science fair participation adds up to your laurels no doubt but if you were not allowed to participate after the 9th standard doesnot have anything to do with you being at a disadvantage. You can tell them the same thing. They would completely understand. They would look at is as you participated 4 times and not that you could not participate. So be positive!

If you are already studying the A level curriculum it is always better that you take further math courses. But donot forget the SAT subject test math level II exam. Do write that for sure. Also write the AP exams offered by CollegeBoard they hold high weightage while applying.

Another thing I may suggest is you going through MIT admissions blogs. They are highly informative and fun to read. You learn a lot from them.

Hope this helps!

Abha
International Student Counselor
India

"Abha
International Student Counselor
India"

Duuh...counsellor of what???

Well I am a counselor who helps Indian students with International applications and queries. Thats what I mean by "International Student Counselor." I am an official CollegeBoard coordinator in India.

ok...(10 chars)

lol.. vampiro goofed up there.

Well i didnt really goof up dude....As far as i know collegeboard is an independent organisation and does not in any way play any role in the admission decisions of colleges, neither is an official word about the policies of any college...so their consultancy service is in no way more official than Princeton Review's or petersons...
I was thinking that abha was an international counsellor from MIT....

oh and also...abha i am not targeting you for anything...let me tell you that your advice was genuine and good....

and also Abhishiv Matt McGann is not the only admission officer at MIT...so when your application goes to MIT, it will be forwarded to ANY admission officer.....I also suggest you go to the MIT forum and have a chat with Ben Jones (for official queries), although LauraN,pebbles and mootmom can handle a lot of queries in an unofficial way....Also visit these blogs...
matt.mitblogs.com
ben.mitblogs.com

ur right!!!

Can we substitute research involvement with International Olympiads for MIT?

I only have ONE national level research award (runner-up). But I represented and got a bronze medal for the international physics olympiad.

Vampiro well yes CollegeBoard is an independent body and they obviously have no roles in making admission decisions or anything. We only help out students with their queries thats all. The CollegeBoard is a not for profit organization. Moreover the reason why I have answered to Abhishiv's query is just because I thought I might be able to help him with what I know about admissions.

I am not even saying that Matt Mc Gann is the only admissions officer at MIT. I do know there are many like BenJones, LauraN, etc. Also I have mentioned about the MIT blogs in general not which you again have mentioned. I just like to help out students who have queries thats all.

International olympiads are a very good way to show your involvement in science....the olympiads are deemed very prestigious and equal personalised research and are like sort of a standard too coz everyone cannot have access to research facilities...

Abha i wasnt questioning your motives but i wrote that reply to tell that i wasnt just goofing up coz these days there are a lot of people unlike you who like use such posts like 'international student counsellor' and befool students into their schemes( as frantic high school students take them too seriously like i did last year)...and as i have been a part of this forum for quite some time now i like to clarify things i dont like or find suspectible :)....hope u understand the intentions....

Thats okay Vampiro I understand what you are trying to say. I have no issues with that.

abha is competition in getting into top LACs (economics) with aid (25k and above) almost as dffficult for a candidiate to get into as in a Business program( ranking 20-40 business univs ) with similar aid?

One thing more I am fascinated by coninental Europe so studying in some EU country like Sweden or Netherlands (rotterdam) would be OK(job wise) ? .My parents seem to be admamant on sending me to US only.
scores (2000+ hoping 2150+ in june sat 790chem 780 maths) top 3 in my class for 4 yrs, partitme job( financial consultant assistant 2yrs 5 hrs per day) Community Service Loads of it.Participation in Sports(not a winner though) and lots of academic achievements.
I do not have any International stature Science awards or participation
although at school level) .

PS - I will not apply for any science related field

DhanPrad...actually getting into a business program with aid is really very tough because out of the 40 top universities there will be hardly 15-20 that offer aid to internationals in the first place.....Out of these 20 what like 15 will comprise of schools like the ivies,MIT,stanford etc....so getting into them alone is really tough....On the other hand getting into an LAC even the top one is relatively easy and if u target like the top 25 LAC's with your stats you can easily get aid above or around 25K (although most of them dont really call that aid but just merit scholarship...but its money both ways :) ).......If u were to take my advice i'd tell you to make a balanced list...dont underestimate yourself and apply to business schools that interest you...hey you just might get in!!!also apply to like 7-8 LAC's like 4 from top 10,then 4from 11-25...that way.....
A more general advice for any international (specially Indian) seeking aid is to apply to as many universities as you can...20-25-30 whatever...

Also i see lots of Indians just striking around here and there for answers...i'd suggest u guys become regulars on The Indian Thread...Its not only a place for casual hangout but loads of experienced people are on the thread and you can get valuable advice as not everyone will look into seperate threads like me....and well lets face it we have to pass the legacy to you guys :)

Dhanprad well getting into LACs are tough but I would rate them on par with other business schools. The only way I think they are different is for the fact that LACs have lesser student intake and also low international intake when compared to B-school. If you are strongly looking out for financial aid then I think you should choose a healthy combination of both LACs and B-schools. This way your chances of getting financial aid is leveraged and more pronounced.

On the other hand I strongly feel LACs might be able to grant you financial aid much better than what a good B-School like Harvard, Wharton etc could grant you. The only thing you need to do is to demonstrate a flair in that subject. Like you said you have work experience which is quite good!

hmm....so its equally tough either ways

DhanPrad:

I think Wharton is the only top business school that offers undergrad business.Harvard business school is only for graduate level. For undergraduate, you enroll in Harvard College which follows the liberal arts curriculum. Same goes for Yale, Princeton,Dartmouth and Brown.

I think MIT's Sloan business school is also only for graduate students.

yes i know those refernces to Harvard etc were not made by me and besides they are definitely not below 20-40 rank
