Questions about Knox College

Can anyone tell me anything about Knox?

Got my first acceptance letter today. I applied as a Priority Applicant, so I had a free application and a reply within two weeks. It's the only school I applied for early action for, so I won't get any more letters till March/April. But right now I'd like to learn about Knox a little more and keep my options open.

The letter said that if I go there I will receive a $14,000 scholarship for all four years. They might give me more if I need and apply for more. Princeton Review ranked this school as one of the schools with students happiest with financial aid packages. Is this true? My family is middle-class, so although my EFC is pretty high, my parents really can't/aren't willing to pay for a lot.

It's supposed to be an Urban school. How is it? Dead boring? Okay? Thrilling? Honestly, I don't really care since I'm not much a party girl, as long as I won't be bored out of my mind, wishing there was more to stare at other than my dorm wall.

How's the weather there? I know it's cold...but how cold? I'm a Californian girl so perhaps Illinois would be a bad move for me. I dread the cold...but I mean I'm sure I could get used to it?

It's got the basics that I want. Neuroscience, small classes, money available, liberal arts college. Apparently it's ranked as 80 on the list for 2008's Best Liberal Arts Colleges. Is that okay? It's certainly not flattering, but that's an ok rank right?

Are there lots of different people...or will it be the same old cliques and if you don't fit in you're a nobody?

I know visiting the school before deciding anything would be best, but honestly my parents will not pay for the plane ticket.

I don't know, any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I got my acceptance letter in November as a priority applicant as well, and I'm also a californian. but I love the cold, and I'm sure you can get used to it. my friends who graduated last year have moved to illinois and they love it, including the cold! :)

as for financial aid packages, yes, they are very very very generous in giving money. lol

hope this helps...even just a little.

first - congrats! :)

ooh you both are californians too, haha, that's cool :) me too

i like the cold better than the heat, so i'm not too afraid. where i live it snows, so it gets pretty cold, but i'm sure not as cold as illinois... i'm sure you could get used to it.

it's pretty rural, there's not much to do in town, that i saw atleast, but there's alot to do on campus. there's restaurants, shops, etc. it's different than southern california... i wasn't expecting it, even though it's been a year since i moved to a more rural area of CA, i'm still used to malls, lots of restaurants, etc. i was also sick at the time but visting knox the next day made up for it :) there's also a train that goes to chicago, so i'm not too concerned. my visit was really enjoyable, my dad was very impressed. the campus is beautiful, the students & faculty are very friendly.

rank 80 seems good to me. i know if i go to knox i'll get a great college education.

i sat in on a biology class (principles of ecology) it was really interesting. & i'm planning on an english major. the class was very small, including about 10 of us who were prospective students.

also, i think everyone can fit in at knox, it didn't seem cliquey to me at all.

i would like to go back and visit for one of the accepted student days, but i'm not sure if i can afford it.

i would try to talk to your parents if you can, you really really should visit the college you are planning to attend. that's where you will spend the next 4 years of your life, it's important to find a place you like. good luck :)

i hope this helps a little :)

I think that Lovelykittycat gave you some good insights. Galesburg is a small city- 33,000. (The town always reminds my d and I a little of Stars Hollow on the Gilmore Girls- there's even a scarecrow festival). The college is part of the city. You can walk to the stores and restaurants but there is a lot to do on campus. They get all sorts of speakers, movies and the clubs are very active. According to my d, there are lots of types of people so that everyone finds a niche. And there are definitely many kids who are not going to be classified into a set group.

As for the cold, well, it is northern Illinois. You will get snow but not tons of it. You learn to dress for it and you get used to it. Some of us even enjoy the variable weather of the midwest. It is not boring!

I know this is delayed, but I just wanted to thank all of you for the insight. It's really helpful. I'm still waiting on Knox's financial aid package, and if it's very good, we might considering getting on a plane to visit :)
