Questions about minoring

Hey guys,

So I got into Tufts’ engineering program and was wondering if it’s possible for me to minor in a language. Since there are 38 credits requirement, is it really hard to minor if I major in engineering? Do you guys know if it’s also possible to study abroad if I’m in school of engineering?

Thanks

Congratulations!

Which language?

There are some special language minors created for engineers, they can be used as a model for others…

Yes, it is possible to study abroad as an engineer, but it takes lots of planning. I would advise talking to an advisor freshman year.

Good Luck!

@Mastadon
I’m planning to minor in Japanese and really want to do. I believe they do offer Japanese minor for engineers, but I’m just worried whether I can fulfill my requirements along with finishing the minor requirement.

I’m thinking about going to Tufts-in-Japan program here: http://students.tufts.edu/study-abroad/tufts-programs/japan. And I will talk to my advisor about it once I’m at Tufts

Thanks for your help and info!

It will depend on how advanced you are in Japanese already and somewhat on which engineering major you choose.

The Japanese minor can be taken by engineers.

It appears that the minor requires 6 courses above Japanese 4.

A typical engineering major has one humanities, one social science and three humanities/arts/social science electives. There are also two free electives. So, up to 7 electives are available. (Biomedical Engineering has only 1 free elective, and computer science has more electives)

The key points are that your study abroad courses are going to have to be approved to count toward
the Minor (which will be decided by the Japanese department) and satisfy the mix of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences specified by the Engineering School requirements. The fact that it is a Tufts run program should make this easier to plan (or determine that it is not possible) since Tufts should already be familiar with the content of the courses in the program.

The fact that there are no engineering courses offered by the study abroad program is going to make it challenging because you will need to take almost all of your HASS courses in one semester and make sure that the required engineering sequence of courses can be moved around to free up an entire semester for HASS courses.

For the Japanese minor for engineering, I think I only need 4 courses above Japanese 2, not four. And as for now, I have already satisfied 5 credits by AP, does that help?

You are right- the engineering minor only needs 4 courses above Japanese 2 - I was looking at the LA minor.

According to this source, the max credits you can get for AP are 4 - but that should help, as you should get credit for Japanese 3 &4.

The max credits I can get is 8 though…

Yes, you can apply 8 max across all subjects toward you degree - what I was referring to was 4 max for Japanese…

If you have other AP credits, that could help as well.
