Questions about placement tests

Let's say I get placed into first semester calculus and I want to go straight into second semester. Is this allowed?

Also, how does the language placement work with the language requirement? If you get placed into L3, you have to take two courses of the same language; if you get placed into L4, you just have to take one course. But what if you are placed into L3 and you think you should be in L4? Can you take the L4 class and be done with the language requirement?

It varies from department to department. The math one is pretty flexible and I’d just talk to the professor during shopping week and explain that you think you can do 115 instead of 112. The language one is less flexible and if you take a class that you didn’t place into YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT. You can talk to someone in the department during Camp Yale or shopping period, but you have to have it approved before taking a class you didn’t place into.

Also, just going to throw this out there, but you might not even want to place out of the intro courses… Yale is going to be a lot harder than you think it is and even L3 or 112 will be challenging. And if they aren’t there’s nothing wrong with taking a few “easy-ish” classes your first semester.

I can tell you from painful personal experience that if you are placed into L3, you should seriously consider taking L2. You should look into exactly what is expected and what is taught in those classes. This is especially the case if you are a person who is just really good at taking tests–your score on the placement test may overstate how easy the level will be for you.
