Questions about prep school admissions

Just a few questions:

How much are grades, SSAT scores, recs, ECs, etc. weighted for admissions?

What types of questions are asked at an interview?

What is a good SSAT score for a 8th grade white female?

When it says 48% accepted, what are your chances?

Thank you!

only an admissions officer can say

basic questions you know the answer to (what do you like to do in your free time, what’s your favorite class…etc)

its by percentile, so anything above 80-85%ile is amazing

i don’t know your stats, but you basically have a 50/50 chance of getting in, which is pretty good considering some schools are below 20%

@Emily2025: Except for the “What types of question are asked at an intervew?” question, there really isn’t any single/definitive answer to your questions.

I’ll take on the the last one, though still quite generally:
Independent of a school’s admit percentage, there are kids in the pool (those with exceptional stats) who will have a good chance at getting in everywhere and some (those with below average stats) who have a less likely chance of getting in anywhere.

Without knowing your stats (and really, I’m not asking you to share them), it’s tough to say if you are at one of these extremes. If I were you, I’d look at the school’s average SSAT scores/percentiles (many publish this) for incoming students and see how you stack up. If your scores are higher than the average (and assuming the rest of your app matches your scores), then you have an above average chance of being admitted. And vice versa.

This is all a long way of saying “it depends”.

Hi Emily,
From your previous posts I can see you’re interested in Culver! I’ve already had my interview and admissions process there, so here goes. The questions I distinctly being asked in my interview was what my favorite book and movies are; my hero; why I want to go to Culver; why I think I should be accepted at Culver; my strengths and weaknesses and if I could go to dinner with anyone and ask one question, who and what would it be. As far as SSAT goes, they look at your estimated national percentile. From your “Chance me” post, I would say you’re in the high 90s, where I am also. And one last thing: I have heard that Culver’s acceptance rate is far lower than what BoardingSchoolReview says, and the actual percent is probably in the 20s.
I hope we are both at Culver next year!
