Questions about Rowing at BS

I've been doing rowing for two years now (and when I apply at the end of this year I am planning on using it as a hook). Does anyone else here do rowing? Did you use it as a hook? Do many people do rowing at BS? and what are the boat sheds like? I've seen a couple of pictures of the Deerfield (not actually anything that special which is annoying as it is my first choice), Episocpal (amazing!), Groton (meh), Kent (not too bad) and the Saltonstall Boast house at Exeter (pretty nice), but I was wondering if anyone had been too them and what they thought (especially for Andover and Deerfield).
THANKS!

i only have seen kent’s from the outside, but it looks pretty nice. then again, i have nothing to compare it to.

thanks
anyone else???

welcome : )

I rowed at St. Paul’s, son rows at St. Paul’s and nephew rows at Andover. Here is Andover’s: [Google Image Result for http://www.andovercrew.com/Boathouse/OurBTH/wBTH_0662a.jpg](http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.andovercrew.com/Boathouse/OurBTH/wBTH_0662a.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.andovercrew.com/Boathouse/indexBoathouse.html&usg=__0e5CcL_tXUkXFa-Yea1LYscot44=&h=621&w=842&sz=167&hl=en&start=2&sig2=_0dAhjqcEaYn0fAz6KBMOg&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=TmNZ0tWyutl52M:&tbnh=107&tbnw=145&prev=/images%3Fq%3DAndover%2Bboathouse%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1&ei=lXl0S_v-GJGKtAP-u5GNBg)

They have a great crew program and I believe most of their 1st boys crew graduated last year.

You did not ask about SPS, but they have an amazing new boathouse and row on a 1.25mile (approx) man-made and dredged course that can take 4 boats abreast. Best course I ever rowed on! At most schools it is a hook, so include your ERG times.

i hear its like a cult lol just sayin’ haha

Rad: Correct. It IS a cult! My daughter rowed all through high-school and even as a college senior all of her closest friends are rowers. My wife, who is the only one Not to row, has crew t-shirts and coffee mugs. Definitely strange.

I will say that the Andover parents are the most incredibly well organized group of people with wonderful emails and communication, but the boathouse… well it needs some work.

haha in the majority of the schools we toured we had crew related people…

my taft tour guide was like- DON’T JOIN!!! lol its a cult… one must do it all seasons or die…and die if you do do all seasons lol

and choate tour guide was a hard core rower- she was like i STRONGLY suggest everybody should row at some point in their life…etc…

haha

When my son and I were touring one of the athletic facilities, a tall guy with a tiny waist and huge shoulders walked by. I asked our tour guide, “Crew?” He said, “Yep. They’re intense.”

ilovethattree - rowing would not be considered a hook unless you are recruited for rowing

I rowed at the Exeter summer program. The river and the boathouse are pretty cool and it was a lot of fun. However, I wasn’t a great rower. I got demoted to the novice novice boat. Also, the coaches seemed really intense (even though I don’t think they coach during the school year), and it seems like it would be a cult, or at least require a great deal of your effort.

,episcopal dosent hAVE CREW

Well I am REALLY serious about rowing, as in during the holidays did 5 days of training a week (about 12 hours p/w) and went on two week long rowing camps as well as compete in 2 major rowing regattas. I was going to go to Australian Nationals in 2 weeks for Girls Quad Scull except I got my appendix out three weeks ago and haven’t been able to keep on training/wont be able to row my best in two weeks time so another girl took my place.

lax: oh, sorry, must of been somewhere else then…
winterset: Thanks for the link. That’s where I saw all the pictures for the other boat-houses, and YES, the andover boathouse really does need some work!

P.s Does anyone know what the rowing is like @ deerfield. It’s my first choice and want to know if it’s as good as other schools rowing.

I think Deerfield has been rowing for a relatively short time, but has been quite successful despite that. The girls’ and boys’ teams have won championships of late.

The boathouse (Hammerschlag) was built about five years ago and is on the Connecticut River (correct me if i’m wrong), about a ten minute drive from campus.

I think DA has yet to send a team to Henley, but that certainly could happen if they keep up their strong showing.

Speaking of Henley, I think Kent – which has a really strong program – goes there regularly.

Wow, some of those boathouses are beautiful! Serious rowers shouldn’t come to Andover because it has the worst boathouse.

Benley - That’s a flawed statement if I ever heard one!

Brand new boathouse and a world record last month:

[Salisbury School / Crew Team Sets World Record](http://www.salisburyschool.org/home/news_item.asp?id=465&zzSec=athletics&newsArea=athletics&pointid=655)

Really, Benley? Interesting then that the Andover Boys have won the team trophy at the NEIRA’s for three years in a row (2007, 2008, & 2009) and also won the Silver Medal at the US Rowing Youth National Champsionships this past summer. (Kent won Bronze.) The girls have been successful as well, taking second place at the NEIRA’s. There is a wonderful website run by Andover parents (and alumni parents), [Andover Crew](http://www.andovercrew.com) which is a wealth of information about the top-notch rowing program. Yes, the boathouse needs to be replaced (and the school recognizes this) , but do rowers spend their time in the boathouse? The most important aspect of any rowing program – besides incredibly hardworking and committed rowers – is the coaching staff. Andover has a terrific coaching staff.

I really don’t think Benley was being serious.

I interpreted his post to mean that while nice facilities are, well - “nice,” they obviously don’t determine the success of the program.

reductio ad absurdum

leanid: Thanks! That helped a lot!

Benley: Agreed! ahaha jks
