Questions about scheduling and courses... help please!!

Okay, so I am brimming with questions about Cornell courses and scheduling and don't know who to ask, so I'm hoping someone here might know the answers to some of them.

Is it possible for Freshman to register for more than 18 credits with the intent to drop some? I want to test out a few classes in Japanese before I commit to it, but I don't want to risk 6 whole credits if I find out after testing the waters that I won't be able to handle it. Or will the Student Center not allow more than 18 credits to be signed-up for?

Do PE classes count toward that 18-credit limit for first semester Freshmen?

I've taken 2+ years of Spanish and will be taking the online placement test this summer (not expecting to do well at all because my 2+ years didn't help me much), but will I have to take Spanish at Cornell? Or can I decide to take something else?

Are intro classes for languages only offered during the Fall semester each year?

How highly recommended is it for freshmen to include a foreign-language course in their first-semester schedule? Is it bad to start with languages in Sophomore year?

Are courses filled in a first-come, first-served basis? As in, should we wake up as early as possible (after 9am that is) to start scheduling classes, or does that not factor into who gets admitted into which course? [I'm guessing it's first-come, first-served, but someone suggested that it wasn't and I'm curious.]

If you need me to clarify any of these questions, let me know. But if anyone has an answer to any of them, I'd really appreciate help! Scheduling opens in 5 days and I don't think I'm ready... :(

Scheduling opens up in 5 days? omg

Scheduling for new students starts August 21st, I dunno where you heard it starts in 5 days.

You can petition your advisor or the registrar to let you take more than 18 credits with the intention of dropping some.

No

No you don’t have to continue with Spanish

Not sure, probably though (so that the next one in the sequence can be done in the Spring)

If you like languages, then you might want to start them the fall of your freshmen year so you have ample time to become fluent.

Yes, it is first come first served. It is also laughable to think you want to wake up after 9 to start scheduling classes. More like 6:30 am.

Doesn’t CAS register before the rest of the school so they have priority over everything?

i believe so

i’m pretty sure you can change your language

Sorry, by “scheduling” I meant “course registration;” it starts on July 8th. I didn’t really know there was a difference between the terms. But anyway, thanks for answering my questions, chendrix!

And about that 9am thing, the email I received said registration begins at that time, and I was only referring to that. Of course I’m getting on a lot earlier to get myself organized. :)

CHendrix:

Scheduling for CAS is in 5 days. It is different this year. All other colleges are later which I am wondering if it means that the rest of the schools are at a disadvantage for scheduling? Does CAS get to sign up for classes in the other colleges before they do?
Please correct me if I am wrong.

cadmiumred: No, CAS students only get to sign up for classes in A&S before everyone else. This is what the schedule for enrolling looks like:

* July 8-19. On-line enrollment into Arts and Sciences courses for new Arts and Sciences students only

 • July 20-29. On-line enrollment into all Cornell courses continues for new students in A&S and all other colleges at Cornell
 • July 30—August 9. Balloting for First Year Writing Seminars
 • August 25, 7:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Enrollment reopens only to new A&S students to make changes
 • August 25, 9:00 a.m. Enrollment reopens to new Cornell students
 • August 26. Enrollment opens for all Cornell students and continues until September 18.
