Questions about Scholarships/Grants/Financial Aid for UC's

If you receive Scholarships/Grants/Financial Aid for UC's, when you pick the school you want to go to, and start getting the aid, how does the school check that you are spending it on school? do you need to turn in receipts? or do they just hand you the money each quarter?

also if you get money from one school, does it mean that you'll get about the same for another, unless the expense of going to one school is higher than the other, meaning you'd get more???

thanks

The way it works at UCD is, the school receives the money, uses it to pay off anything you owe, then gives you what’s left over. If nothing’s left over, then you get no free money to waste on booze.

You never receive any of your gift aid unless you have paid off everything on your account. Whatever is left over, you get.

Your FA report should/could be slightly different at other schools. No, you wouldn’t get more, everything is based off your EFC.

i see

but what if on your fafsa you stated that you’d be living off campus (apartment), but then you decide to live at home, what happens to that money that would’ve been spent on housing?

i’m just wondering, is it possible that they say “well, you didn’t need it, so we’ll keep it”
or will the give you whatever is left?

If you state on your FAFSA that you were going to live off campus but instead are going to be with your parents, I don’t think it would change it.

If you stated on your FAFSA that you were going to live ON campus but instead are going to be off campus/parents, then it would be reduced.

so, could it be said that you could pocket the money that wasn’t spent on housing, if you live at home?

i’m not trying to work the system…just curious, because i’m not quite sure where i’ll be living
