I registered selective service while filling out FAFSA. After a month I constantly receive letters from US army and US navy. Next thing I know a staff sergeant gentle called me and wanted to come to my house. Is this necessary step in the process? Because I have no interest in working in the army.
I don’t think there is any connection. Every male has to register for selective service when completing the FAFSA for the first time, and there is no way that the military branches have the time/money to contact all those folks. It is likely they might have your contact information from another avenue.
Oh, there was the misstep. I would recommend contacting those branches and letting them know you are not interested and to stop sending mail/contacting you.
Currently, male US citizens and immigrants are required to register for the Selective Service System, although the actual possibility of military conscription in the US is remote. The FAFSA has an option of registration, if one does not want to have to do it separately.
Of course, military recruiters may try to get registrants to volunteer for military service.
The Selective Service System actually does feed into a Defense Department database that the various branches do use for (strictly voluntary!) recruitment purposes. The phone call was probably because of the form that was filled out but recruiters would have already have access to this student’s registration information any way.
It’s good that you got that cleared up before you had to report for basic training!

Oh good heavens UCB!!! I am the mother of boys. Do you really think that I don’t already KNOW that!!! And don’t you think that I know that conscription is remote in the US???
No one is questioning the OP’s efforts to register for the selective service. What we’re saying is the misstep is that LATER the student received some kind of email (likely some kind of recruitment email), he filled it out, and THAT gave the recruiters the idea that he has an interest in joining. That is why he’s getting all these bothersome communications.
