hi, i've been reading about special interest housing on the nyu website, and i was wondering if someone who's done it can tell me if they thought it was fun and beneficial or not.

does it take up a lot of your time? is it difficult to make friends without being in one? and if you are in one, do you tend to only hang out with the other people in your group? is it hard to fit in if you're not an expert on whatever topic the group is centered around?

thanks! :)

btw i’ll be a freshman of the class of 2015

also what is the difference between explorations theme floors and The Residential College at Goddard?

Maybe someone else can comment at more length about this matter.

I think explorations theme floors are floors you apply to in order to be a part of the events and activities that will take place revolving around that theme throughout the year. My understanding is that the quality varies depending on the particular theme and floor. Some are better planned and implemented while others are rather “loose” with participation not necessarily strong by residents.

The Residential College seems to have many more organized activities for its residents who are likely to attend “Writing the Essay” in house with their dorm mates, besides engaging in community service projects, speaker programs and other ECs together. The community is very close knit as a whole compared to most Exploration theme floors.

OK, I got started and hope someone else will jump in with first hand experience.

thank you for the information! what exactly is “writing the essay”?
