For those who have already attended the Spring Reception-

Did you get to meet with professors from your colleges? (Arts & Science, Newhouse, Whitman, etc.)

How are the tours of the dorms organized? Do you have to pick which dorm you want to tour, or do they assign you a general tour guide?

What information/activities did they provide in the Carrier Dome after lunch?

Is there anything that should not be missed?

Any comments about the reception would be appreciated!

I also have a question… are you separated by major, and about how long does the day last?

We attended last week for Music. You begin your day at 9:00am in Shine Auditorium which is housed in Student Center near the Sheridan Hotel. There were approximately 2,000 student there that day. After a general introduction by Chancellor, you were dismissed BY SCHOOL (Arts, Newhouse, Business, etc.) and taken as a group either by shuttle or on foot to your particular building. For music, about 50 of us met in Crouse Hall within Crouse College for a presentation by Dean of Music and a Jazz faculty member along with a graduate student moderator helping with questions from parents and students. Very informative and organized. By noon we were brought to Carrier Dome for lunch (tasty). There you could visit the many stations set up by financial aid, bursar, clubs, sports, etc. for questions and information. At 1:00pm tours by bus began to leave.
Day finished roughly at 3:00pm.

Sounds like a busy day!

Did you park on South Campus and take a shuttle bus to the Shine Auditorium?

Did you get to go inside a dorm room on the tour?

Out of curiosity, what food did they serve at the Carrier Dome?

we went last week also… sadly, we were very disappointed. There was very little specific info given (or chance to ask ?) in our section for math/sciences. we honestly learned very little new AND if we wanted to ask anything specific were told to come back for the tour of the building at 2PM. Totally felt the whole day could have been done at home on the computer as we were just shown videos the majority of the time. While there was some speaking, it def was not made to feel personal as other large schools have done. Lunch at the dome was OK, but by then my D was disallusioned and made the decision SU wasnt for her, and we left. Conversations at the lunch table were similar…several other kids made the same decision for similar reasons I’m afraid. IMO Syracuse dropped the ball in not at least trying to “fake” that they wanted us there…basically, we got the impression that if you came, great. If not, there were plenty of others out there waiting for your spot… I was sad that she wouldn’t at least consider it anymore…

My d and I had a different experience but we DID gear up for the crowds and knew that
we had to map out what we wanted to accomplish. Since the Music Dept is so small,
we had alot of one on one time if wanted. We stayed at the on-campus Sheridan the night before and used the afternoon to explore the campus BEFORE we
were officially taken around the next day. I had a financial aid question and found that
office staff very accommodating and eager to help. Lunch consisted of a pasta dish, salad, rolls, drinks and cookies. Not gourmet but not greasy pizza either. I think they fed
and moved around 2,000 people quite efficiently.
