Questions about the essays

Hello everyone, I was curious as to what the defining differences were between the common app essay prompt...

"Please provide a statement (250 words minimum) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve."

...and the college's supplement's essay prompt...

"Tell us why you think ______ is a good match for you. Is there anything in particular that appeals to you and your objectives?"

My first guess was that the common app essay prompt would give space for an applicant to tell what was lacking in his or her current institution, but aren't applicants generally advised to avoid negativity altogether?

Also, when high school seniors apply to college, they can literally write about whatever they want in the common app essay. If a transfer applicant wanted to write an entertaining narrative that would tell a lot about him/her as a person, would it be a good idea to upload such an essay into the additional information part?

a lot of people use that idea of writing a personal story to tie together some of their reasons for wanting to transfer (example: my mom always told me to challenge myself and i’m not being challenged at school, blahblah, so my mom helped me learn that i need to be challenged to do well, etc). i did it completely differently. for my supplement, i wrote a personal story and tied it together with my career goals and the mission of my future school. then for the commonapp one, i made it literally about why i want to transfer. i explained what i didn’t like about my school in one or 2 lines and then wrote the rest about what’s better and what i hope to gain from the new school. that said, i only applied to one school, so you may not be able to do that if you apply to multiple schools.

What was your gpa when you applied to Cornell?

3.49 (because of a freaking C :frowning: ) with 58 units completed

Anyone else? Do different opportunities truly exist for both essays?
