Questions about the pharmacy program and chances

SAT Score: 1760/2400, 1250/1600
M 680
V 570
W 510

1st gen. Asian male, CT resident
GPA 3.77
Rank 28/240 (12%)
EC's: At the end of senoir year it will be 2 years cross country and 4 years track. I have two letters in cross country and 1 in track so far. Also, 60 community service hours at a local hospital.

Thier website says all I need is a transcript and SAT scores, but you can send recs, essays, or personal statements if you want. How many letters of recs do they want? Two? I'm not sure if I want to send an essay, writing is not my strong point. Also, is this a 0+6 program or an 2+4 program? How many applicants does their pharm school accept? Is it one of the most competitive in the Northeast?

Tough Call...

I do not know if being a non-NJ resident makes admission easier or more difficult. IF it is more difficult to get in as an out-of-state candidate, then I would think your SAT/GPA combo is too weak. HOWEVER, if they need more out-of-state students, you could be fine. The program about 60% female, so being a male may be helpful! Sorry I cannot offer any other real insight.

If admitted from high school, it is a 0-6 program. I believe they had about 3,600 applicants for the Class of 2012, and accepted about 600 of them. They do offer a Rutgers Newark option. If accepted to that 2+4 program, you would attend Rutgers Newark for the pre-professional years (first 2 of 6), with a direct transfer/admission to the New Brunswick campus for the remaining 4 professional years of the program. While the college labels it 2+4, it technically is a 0-6 program as no other tests or applications are required. That is a nice back-door entrance, again with the guaranteed spot (of course assuming you maintain the minimum required standards)! Note that EVERYONE must interview at the end of the pre-professional years.

Rutgers is rated in the Top 10 Pharmacy programs in the country. My DS had 2 teachers send letters of recommendation when he applied last Fall.

If you get in, it is meant to be, if not, there is something better in store for you! Good luck!

well...you have a better GPA (assuming it is uw), though the same rank, as I did in high school
my sat score was higher though, and i was in-state

even though i am in the EMSOP program, im trying not to be biased in this post
unfortunately, rutgers is not top 10 in the country, last time i check...some other prominent schools would be UNC-chapel hill, UMich, USC, and UT-austin (i think)

you should try to work on your SAT's if you still have another change...though im not sure if you can fit one in before dec. 1st

im not meaning to discourage you, but i always thought (before i came) that rutgers would be an easier university; i was mistaked
in the pharm program...people of all different caliber are here...most of them are AP students who did not have the money or chance to go to a "better" school...competition is stiff...on the first chem exam, the class average was a 79, and my TA said that was WAY too high
for the first bio exam, the average was about a F+
highest grade was a 148 out of 150

To answer your question, I would treat this application like any other application: two letters of rec, an essay (try to write it well...it might prove to be the selling point), and look at the app! make sure you dont make any mistakes like my friend did

it is a 0-6 program..though i always like to see it as a 2-4 program (since you are still taking ug courses during the first two years and then grad work the rest of the way)
im pretty confident in the number East Coast Mom stated...in orientation there were approximately...500-600 people there (i think...i didnt count the seats), but the 2010 class of pharm is, as of now, around 400 pple...it's supposed to whittle down to around 250 pple by the end of the 6 years

if you look at the NE pharm universties...there are...university of maryland-Baltimore, SUNY Buffalo, Philadelphia College of Pharm and Science, Rutgers EMSOP to name some
all the ones that I named before Rutgers is "ranked" better than Rutgers
(the ranking might be outdated)
http://www.pharmcas.org/advisors/admissionsprocess.htm
those are some of the schools that have 0-6 programs

happy huntings, and if Rutgers is your choice and their choice, welcome; if not, then i'm sure you'll be happy in another pharm school

Thanks for the replies. I think I feel safer at a 0-6 program. I think I can easily get into UCONN but it's highly competitive to even be considered into their program. (You need a 3.5 gpa and 85% on the PCAT to even be considered for an interview) The school is very small and only takes in about 100 a year, although they don't take transfers.

If I decide to do pre-pharm work somewhere else can I transfer into Rutgers school of pharm? I'd like to have a lot of options after my pre-pharm work incase I don't get in one.

I'll try applying EA to Rutgers and see what happens. One major problem is that I got a C+ in bio. But I have A's in chem and my maths. I'm taking ap stats, ap calc ab, and honors physics this year.

well..from what i've heard, its much much harder to get into EMSOP (rutgers's pharm school) during college, such as major transfers and just applying. This is mostly due to the fact that half of the students drop out of the pharm program; the program wants "less students". the 2 years of undergrad work you will do here at rutgers is basically the same material pre-meds do--bio/chem/calc/ochem

Check out Univ. of the Sciences in Phila. Rolling adissions. Avg. SAT 1100/1600. It's 0-6 pharm d.

I was dumb enough to believe 2 GC's - guess I liked what I heard! Now that I've done a little research, I see Rutgers EMSOP tied for #25 in 2005. Here is the link:

well east coast mom
im not saying that its not a good school (and neither is the ranking)
i was just stating that there were better schools...however...few can match up to the bank per buck of the school
and it is a good school...by no mean is it a bad program

hey i got in here are my stats:

1340/1600, 2010/2400
w: 100.686, uw: 94/5
