Questions about the Provost scholarship

My S1 is in the process of applying to UIUC and we are wondering how tough it is to get the Provost Scholarship.

His SAT score is CR 740; M: 790 and W: 780 and his ACT composite score is 35. He has solid unweighted and weighted GPAs plus he is national merit scholarship semifinalist and AP scholar with Distinction etc.

Here are the questions:
1) What is the Provost Scholarship based on? Is it primarily based on SAT/ACT/GPA? What are the cut off scores?
2) Besides the Provost Scholarship and the national merit scholarship ($500/year), is there any other merit scholarship UIUC offers?
3) Does the Provost Scholarship take into account of whether you are in-state or out of state student?
4) For those of students who got Provost Scholarship, congratulations! What were your SAT/ACT scores?

Thanks in advance!

Very tough. He has to be National Acheivement, National Hispanic Scholar, or National Merit Finalist (otherwise there is no cut-off score and obviously ACT does not get you in because those are all SAT awards) so unless he acheives finalist status he won’t be considered. Second, as part of that program he must have designated Illinois as his top choice college. Third, they award only 30 a year and final decisons take account of anything in the file but particularly high school rank and course difficulty (there is a minum 3.0 GPA requirement but that is a pointless requirement since Finalists usually have well above that) and thus ultimately it depends on how many there are to choose from and how he stacks up against the others. It does not favor in state versus OOS.

There are other scholarships but full tuition scholarships are rare outside that program (one is the James Hunter Anthony endowment for which very high rank/test score applicants (including ACT) may be considered but only 5 to 10 are awarded). There is a Campus Honors program that enrolls about 120 a year for which you need to be in the top 1% to 2% of all applicants (rank and test scores) to get in but only scholarship related to that program is that they usually award OOS by charging them only in state tuition.

There are then many merit awards, anywhere from the $500 to $8,000 range (higher ends usually for OOS) but averaging $1,000 to $4,000, most of which are controlled and awarded by the particular colleges at UIUC and engineering usually has more to award than others.

For the university and particular college related scholartships no separate application from your regular application for admission is required, i.e., he will be considered if he qualifies for any scholarship based on his application for admission file.

drusba, thanks for the info, very helpful…

For priority filing, we should expect to hear the admission decision by mid December. When do we expect to hear the scholarship decision?

scholarship info is generally not given out until March or April.
