Questions About UC Berkeley's M.E.T. Program - Answered by M.E.T. students!

Hi CC!

I’m a current student studying Mechanical Engineering + Business as a part of UC Berkeley’s Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (M.E.T.) program!

If you applied, you’ll know that there are just over two weeks left until the M.E.T. supplemental essay is due on December 18th!

We’d like to make the application process as easy as possible so you can get guidance on the application process, ask for advice, or just learn more about the program by asking current M.E.T. students questions about their experiences!

We’d love to answer any questions you may have!

If you’d just like to find out more about the program, visit met.berkeley.edu!

@chachasra
Thank you for sharing, the MET program is unique, exciting and challenging. Combining disciplines from very coveted, much acclaimed programs, COE&Haas.
GO BEARS &Haas!!

Thanks for thread .What was your EC and job or internship ?Like are they related to management or business?

Thanks for the thread! I’m writing my supplement and was wondering if I should include program specifics (what courses I would enjoy, what I look forward to most etc.). And if yes, what are some of your favorite aspects of being in the program?

Hi @Dizzywillow!! Thank you for the question! I didn’t have a specific EC/job/internship, but rather I tried to talk about the things that I was involved in that I was most passionate about. For my UC essays, these weren’t necessarily about business or engineering, but rather were meant to show snapshots of who I am. In my M.E.T. essay, I talked about my experience at an entrepreneurship competition that showed me that I was interested in this intersection between business & engineering. I then talked about how a later experience at an internship, where I was helping a company launch a new product, reinforced this interest.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is just what worked for me-- we’re working on putting a video out that encompasses several different students and how they each crafted their own essays, so there’ll be more diverse perspectives to reference soon!

In addition, if you visit the http://met.berkeley.edu/student-profiles/, you can find student profiles that include activities that current students did in high school and what they do currently at Cal!

Thank you for your question, @salamandereyes! I don’t believe specifics are necessary (referencing my own essay) but they’re definitely a great addition when you provide the right context! Personally, I really enjoy the tight-knit cohort that the M.E.T. program provides. Being able to bounce perspectives off the 50 diverse people who share similar interests has definitely made my first semester at Cal special. One of the most memorable things was the Special Topics class that we take as freshman, which, for my class, was a Tech Leadership course with the other students from our cohort.

In addition, I love how M.E.T. connected us to resources available within both COE and Haas right from freshman year, because there is so much to take advantage of, especially when you have strong dual interests.

Best of luck with your essay!!

Thanks for answering questions! I was just wondering, from your experience, do you spend most of the time with other MET students or students from the rest of UC Berkeley?

I think this really does vary from student to student within the program. From my experience, I spend a lot of time with M.E.T. students, both socially and just to study together. Having the M.E.T. collaboration space on campus definitely makes it really easy to hang out with students both in my cohort and the 2021 cohort. However, I also joined a consulting group on campus this semester, and since then, I’ve started spending more time with my friends in this club.
I think having the M.E.T. cohort definitely made my transition to Cal much smoother and gave me a group of friends who were taking many of the same classes I was, which I found extremely valuable. Overall, I would say that my friend groups at Cal consist of both students within the program as well as many others who aren’t, but usually I’m hanging out with a mixed group.
Hope this answers your question, @“Drago.724”!

@chachasra Is M.E.T. a honor program in which students have priority for class registration?

@chachasra Does getting an interview for M.E.T. ensure admission into our single-choice major?

@shgolida Berkeley doesn’t have honor programs with class priority other than with the Regents scholarship and athletics, so no, but MET probably gets hella (NorCal impulse) resources. They’re Haas, so they get free stuff and good support.

@nigeluno Getting an interview doesn’t mean you’re in, so no. It means you’re not definitely out of the running.

My son is going to have the interview with Haas for its GMP.
In the Haas portal, it reads, “Haas Undergraduation Admissions - Interviews (GMP & R&C).”
GMP obviously stands for Global Management Program, but what does R&C mean?

@Walter924 thank you

What did you talk about in your essay?
