*7. anyone who is planning to go to spring insight? =)

thanks and good luck to rest of class of 2007!

Hey spunky, I'm an Asian-American as well heading to UCSB. I've heard from some of my friends who visited UCSB that there are some racism there, but I've heard from others, especially those here, that there are none whatsoever - I don't know, I'm clueless about this situation as well.

I've looked into "special interest" housing and I've found an Asian Cultural Dorm floor, but theres only 50 spots available. Look into that, I defiantly will.

Also, if anyone could answer the rest of his questions, that would be greatly appreciated on this end as well.

From what I've heard, it is a fairly chill and relaxed atmosphere. Staying in a special interest floor might be limiting in some ways? I think it would be better to stay in a regular dorm. My brother says FT is best for freshmen and about 1/3 of freshmens stay there.. But it's 10 minutes from campus and you have to bike to class. Personally, if I go there, I would rather live on campus and walk to class. I'm going to Spring Insight. I don't know about the rest..

I'm Filipino and when I visited the school last Halloween, two really cool white chicks gave us a tour of the santa barbara. Even though it is predominantly occupied by Caucasians, they were all super chill and I never even thought of racism while I was there. I definitely think that there is no racism there as the culture of the school makes it taboo.

P.S. If you are worrying about racism, definitely don't apply for the Asian Floor as that is a form of racism. Think About it.

How is it like going to SB as asian/asian american?
I'm full Chinese, graduating from UCSB after this quarter. I don't mind that we're the minority there, it makes me feel a bit special in a sense. You can apply for the API floor if you want to feel at "home" with surrounding asians, but I really don't think it's necessary.

There still is racism, you can't avoid that. My friend was called "China man" at a party where a fight nearly broke out after that.

I accidently slipped on the gas pedal a little bit one time, and some people walking by yelled out "uh oh! asian driver!"

The Korean community here were even apologizing for Cho's actions. I have no clue why, when ill people exist in all races.

So in some sense there's still a lot of consciousness about race. You just have to shrug it off. You'll encounter racism no matter where you go.

What dorm is best for freshmen?
Not Manzanita and San Raf. There is no "best".

What do i need to more about SB? (surroundings,
professors, majors etc)
If you're an engineer, enjoy your freshmen year, after that your time (and sleep) will decrease dramatically. Get your GE stuff worked out also, I took a couple of useless classes where I already satisfied certain requirements.

what opportunities should i take in SB?
What opportunities are you looking for?

what things u wished to avoid/not do at SB?
There's not much that I really forcefully avoided. I have some friends who are regular experimentors with drugs, those things I tended to avoid.

what do i need to bring to dorms?
Not a lot, clothes, computer, hygenic stuff, fridge if you want. Freshmen tend to bring way too many things.

so would you agree that racism isn't really any more or less present in sb than it is in life?

i've grown up always with predominantly whites and asians. my elementary/middle school back east was more white than asian, but asians were the second most predominant race. my high school, in calif., is white and asian, and i'd say there's slightly more asians than whites.. but a good amount of both exist. i would say i've got along great in both areas, so im not too worried about the race thing. but some of those things you mentioned are pretty ridiculous. i think most people i know, on either side, are too apathetic to care about that stuff.

In general I would say yeah it's about the same in life.

However, if you come from a predominately Asian community, you would probably experience less racism there amongst your fellow race than in a predominately white community.
