Posted this on the UDel page but have not gotten any responses, so I thought I'd repost it in this forum:

First-time poster here. My son is weighing his options as the May 1 decision deadline nears. He is interested in a career in medicine and has been accepted into various schools including University of Delaware where he has been offered the DuPont scholarship (full-ride for 4 years). I was hoping to get some input from current UD students who are pre-med, applying to med school either through the Medical Scholars Program or via the HESAC program. We are wondering specifically about the opportunities for volunteer and clinical practicum placements in the Newark area and how likely it would be for someone from UDel to get in to a U.S. med school assuming stellar grades and decent MCAT scores. Statistics on admit rates and number of med school applicants from UDel are not readily available.

Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

The full ride portion of the offer should already be clinching the deal for you. I’m not sure about the research opportunities and volunteer opportunities in that area, though.

Remember that, no matter how qualified someone is, the chances of getting into a med school is still LOW. There is no such thing as a “safety” med school.

With that in mind, I do hope you get the information you’re looking for. I would say your son should go there, just because it would be a wonderful feeling graduating from undergrad with 0 debt, ready to take on the financial demand of med school.

Thanks so much for your input, AceAites. We are trying to weigh the pros and cons while considering all of the great schools he has been accepted to including one ivy and other privates known for “pre-med”, but the $0 price tag is hard to ignore in this economic climate and with the hefty med school price tag looming. Not to mention, he LOVED UDel both times he visited and is sure he can thrive there.

I do hope to get some input from actual UDel students, though.

Just giving this a bump…BUMP!!! Really hoping to hear from UDel students and/or UDel parents who can give first-hand info. Thanks in advance!!!
