Questions about University of Missouri - Columbia

I am a prospective student for the University of Missouri (Mizzou). I will be majoring in biology and will also be taking pre-med courses. I am an out of state student and qualify for the Mizzou Heritage Scholarship. I will submit a FAFSA but for sure will not get any financial aid. I had a few questions about the school:

How is Greek life? I am planning to join Alpha Epsilon Pi. Is it distracting from academics?

How easy/hard are the classes associated with biology and chemistry (I love the subject!)

I've heard that some have lost their Heritage Scholarship, how does that happen? Do you know anyone who is also on this scholarship?

I do not qualify for any financial aid. Are there any scholarships out there that are not published on their "nonresident scholarship" page?

Any tips or input in the school as a whole?

Thanks!

As the parent of a Mizzou alum, I can answer a few of your questions, but not all of them. The renewal requirements for the Mizzou Heritage scholarship are listed here: [Mizzou Heritage Scholarship | Student Financial Aid | University of Missouri](http://financialaid.missouri.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/scholarships/mizzou-heritage-scholarship/index.php). Among other things, you need to have a 3.25 GPA at the end of each academic year. Even a 3.24 will mean you lose the scholarship for the following year.

The Mizzou Alumni Association offers scholarships, described here: [Mizzou.com - Alumni Scholars Program](http://www.mizzou.com/s/1002/index.aspx?pgid=364&gid=1). They’re for everyone, not just children of alumni, and you have to submit an application. Also, by completing the FAFSA, you’ll be in the pool for other departmental/college scholarships that aren’t well publicized.

College social life, Greek or not, can be distracting if you let it be. Last time I checked, only about 1/4 of Mizzou students pledged fraternities and sororities. You can have a social life with or without the Greek scene.

What merit scholarships are available for OOS that are not a minority?

Look on the Student Financial Aid website under Scholarships/Non-Residents.

Mizzou’s scholarship page is somewhat confusing as it is not really clear which scholarships are automatic.

You have to click on the scholarship name and read the description, which says whether or not it is automatic (no special application required) and lists the criteria. You’re right that there is no consolidated list of automatic scholarships, but the descriptions themselves are very clear.

We also have a son at Mizzou. We don’t qualify for financial aid either and haven’t had luck with scholarships. He had a $1000 as a freshman, I think it was for having A+ (a Missouri program that if you complete it in high school, 2 years of Community College are paid in full). Otherwise, unfortunately, we’ve been full pay.
