questions about visiting for the Marquis Awards weekends

Very happy daughter here! She is very excited to attend campus for this special honor. Registration does not open until Wednesday, but she knows that she can only attend the one on Feb. 21, and we feel some pressure to get her travel arranged. I wonder if anyone on this board can help us with some details. We need to buy her a plane ticket and she’ll be traveling alone. Although this in only a day-long event, she will need to spend at least one night. In previous years, does Lafayette assist students traveling alone? We’re hoping there would be a way for her to stay on campus with a current student, and that someone from the school could meet her at the bus station, then drop her off again. We are assuming she’ll fly into Newark and take the bus to Easton. Thank you in advance for any info!

I think the best thing to do is call admissions at Lafayette and find out what they can do. And congratulations!

thank you, and i will do that on Monday, but i actually would like to buy tickets today, and yet i don’t feel comfortable doing so without more details. i was hoping someone here would know a little more about how the event is run…still hoping!

@mom2twotallgirls when and how did your daughter receive notification?
Did anyone else receive notification they’re a finalist for the marquis fellowship?

My S was also invited to campus for the interview day! Wish I could help but it would be the blind leading the blind. What an exciting opportunity for both of them!

@appreciative She received a FedEx envelope yesterday. It says about 120 applicants have been asked to attend on two different weekends. About 30 of those will be awarded the Fellowship.

From the bus station, walk to the roundabout and keep going straight ahead in that direction, you’ll be able to reach Lafayette (there are 2 entrances; the steeper one is for pedestrians; the longer one is for cars). The college’s public safety is available for escorting if you need http://publicsafety.lafayette.edu/

In the worst case, if both the admissions office and public safety cannot help (I doubt that, though), I can offer some assistance. I’m regularly on CC so just inbox me then.

Congratulations to you both!!! Btw, did your kids apply ED?

@ursawarrior, thank you for the kind offer and the tips! my main question, however, is would my D be able to stay in the dorms with a student host for at least friday night? she has sent an email to her admissions rep, but i was curious if anyone here was in similar circumstances last year and what accomodations/assistance lafayette was able to provide. @shugmom, my D applied RD, but did turn in her application quite early, and also visited and interviewed.

@mom2twotallgirls‌ Current students do host prospective students from time to time. I believe it’s arranged thru admissions. If your daughter would rather stay at a hotel, there’s Lafayette Inn that’s walking distance from campus. http://www.lafayetteinn.com/

thank you @sixstringsrocker she would much rather stay on campus, that’s good to know that there’s a history of current students hosting prospectives.

Oh absolutely, hosting students is very common. I myself hosted a student once. And there were many occasions when my classes had visitors.

Have any others received invitations for Marquis Award weekends?

@momtotwotallgirls did you get it worked out?

hi @deborahb - yes, she is set. a student will host her, and she will be picked up from the bus station in easton. her admissions rep, who she interviewed with, was responsive and helpful. will your son be traveling alone too?

@mom2twotallgirls - no we are coming along. He wants to stay over Saturday night to get a good feel for the campus. I may talk to his admissions counselor about him staying in the dorm that night. Glad you got the arrangements made.

We just got back! We had a wonderful weekend. My son did set up an overnight and had a good time. We will see. The next few weeks should provide the information he needs to make a decision. Spring break is the first week in April and he is going snow skiing with some friends in Colorado. I am hoping that can be a celebratory trip and that all decisions are made.

How are things plugging along for you guys?
