S is interested in Skidmore, and we are thinking of visiting. However due to my work schedule, hoping to "pre-screen" before committing to travel as we can only do a few road trips.
- Would you describe Skidmore as an "A/A-" school or "B/B+"?
- Any information on the sciences? (S will probably major in math or computer science, not quite sure)
- Are profs available to students?
- Is environment collarborative or competitive among students?
- Does the male/female ratio impact student life, or is hardly felt?
- Given no Greek life, is it difficult to become part of the community?
- Have heard overcrowding in dorms - any thoughts?
- Overall impression of the school?

In case anyone who reads this is familiar with Muhlenberg, would love thoughts on there as well. Or maybe some comparisons if you have any.

Thanks.

My daughter is a freshman and so far is very happy. I was a bit concerned about the female/male ratio (60/40), but so far she seems to have just as many male friends as female ones. She loves her dorm and says they have a great time just hanging out together. There is very much a feeling of community for her.

The dorms are crowded, but we easily fit all of her belongings (she has a lot of clothes) into a triple. The common room for each floor is good-sized, however. She said that is where they all gather. The bathroom is small for the seven girls who share it.

She has met with her advisor and several of her professors already to discuss work.

I don’t know whether the environment is competitive or collaborative. My daughter is very self-motivated. She would work hard no matter what.

I think that she would give Skidmore an “A” after one month; I’m not sure how to grade it since I don’t know what your criteria for grading are.

My daughter is a double major with one of her majors being in the sciences. I can’t speak about the quality of the math department.

Hope that helps.

Hi guys,

My S is a HS senior here in our suburb west of Boston. He wants to major in computer science and loved Skidmore when we visited last Spring Break. I too got a good vibe and at least from what was evident in our visit it seems like he would fit in.

My wife and I, both of us software engineers, have concerns though. Our review of the CS Dept’s course offerings leaves us feeling they are scant. There are only 9 or 10 pure CS courses (not counting “topics” or “thesis” type listings or the math courses required for the major). While we want our S to be happy in his choice we are worried that you don’t go to Skidmore to major in CS. Like, um, you don’t go to the Babson to major in music.

Just another plea for first hand info on the CS dep’t at Skidmore. I’d love to be proven wrong.

Anybody?
