Questions?/Concerns?

For those of us with skin problems, are we allowed to use benzoyl peroxide and take acne medication during basic? My skin would look horrible if I wasn't able to follow my regimen for a couple of months.

depending upon how bad your acne is, i would consider trying to ween yourself off of it. i used a benzoyl peroxide wash (proactiv) and i swear its like a drug for your face. I was up to washing my face 3-4 times a day because i got so used to it my face would get oily often. I recently stopped using it and my acne has stayed the same.

I doubt that they'll let you keep it unless it gets to be a real issue. You'd probably get it taken away from you Iday and have to go the clinic to get some prescribed there.

I don't know if you could find a way to get it waivered, but they will most likely take it away. Once it starts getting close and you know who your regional counselor is, you could try having them find out for you, or send you to someone who can.

My skin is completely clear, I'm just afraid that if I stop now, my skin will look how it did before. Oh well, maybe it won't end up being a problem. My skin will probably be the least of my worries during BCT.

Oh, one more thing. I just checked the DoDMERB site and it lists my status as "Commission Qualified". I already knew that I would not be PPQ because of height requirements, but as far as I am aware, I am PNQ. Does anyone know why I wouldn't meet the standards for a navigator? My hearing was just fine, I have 20/20 vision, etc.

Because you are short. Those height requirements are the same. The cockpit is the same for pilots and navs. BTW, nav slots are going away. Many are being replaced by computers or the planes are being retired.

Oh, great.

Do you guys get labor day off? If so, what do you do? Is it just a time for you to catch up/get ahead for school?

when do you guys get your cell phones back? i heard it might be this weekend but wasn't too sure

just got cell phones back Friday for parents weekend and every weekend there after till progress reports. If we are not on academic probation, then we can keep them. Yes we got a three day weekend. It was the first time we could sign out as freshmen and we got to have our parents with us all day friday to attend classes and lunch, it was really cool.

BTW, Jame 3, Parents weekend every year is on Labor day weekend. Four Degrees (freshmen) get to meet up with parents Friday morning, all attend lcasses, then you can leave the academy Friday evening and must return Monday at 7pm. It's a great weekend for all. (Times of course, subject to change but the labor day weekend has been parents weekend for a long time).

Also, usually on the Saturday of Parents Weekend there is a home football game that all cadets must attend (although this was not true this year or last year).

as far as acne meds. During basic don't worry. Before coming here I had proactive, used it every day twice a day. I got to basic and the activity and the sweating helped completely eliminate my acne. I am having my mom send me it now because I am getting a little, but its because I'm touching my face a lot. The air is nice and dry, helps a lot.

Did you have a hard time adjusting to the climate? And did you have a hard time with the thin air during basic? I have heard that the elevation can prove to be challenging in Colorado. I didn't notice at all during summer seminar, but I'm sure it's completely different during BCT.

Also, I have a question for cadets who attended seminar when they were in high school. Looking back, do you think it was an accurate portrayal of real life at the academy? Did it help you at all (aside from making the decision to attend USAFA)? I loved seminar. I thought it was amazing how close you can get to people in just a week because you have common interests and have to work together. It must be an honor to be a member of something greater than just your own small world. I am 100% sold on Air Force because of that experience.

Yes, the altitude will get to you. I can run the AFT around 9:30 to 9:50, but during basic, I ran it in 10:30 and was dead tired...you get used to it by the time basic is over.

As for the summer seminar...no. It is not an accuaret portrayal of life at the Academy. What it IS though, is a great indicator of how you like the place, what interests you, and if its for you. While it wont tell you what its gonna be like, it'll tell you if you want to come here.

Thanks Dr. Phil, I'm glad you came to our rescue since so many of us were longing to bask in your presence here in CC :D can I have your autograph?

Did I say something wrong?

No, Guy4Christ, you didn't say anything wrong. Just every once a while a new jerk cruises through this discussion group. Just read his contributions on the other forums (better yet, don't waste your time) and you'll understand. The rest of us really appreciate your contributions. Thanks.

People can be very petty. I appreciate all of your input, Guy4Christ, as do all of the other aspiring cadets on here.

Summer Seminar is not very accurate, it does give you a "is this right for me?" picture (like Guy4Christ said). "Doolie for a day" was not an "accurate" portrayal of BCT either, but it was a good heads-up.

I cut my AFT (1.5mi run) down by about 50 seconds since basic started. (without running distances very often) The altitude will effect you, but you get used to it.
