offyougo: Yes, you can preship things to SMU - I think most students just mail to their own PO box, but you might want to check with the orientation office to see if there is a central address for pre-move-in shipping. Also there are stores (like the Container Store and Bed, Bath, and Beyond) who let you purchase on-line or in your local store for pick up at the Dallas location. Some students get small storage units for their rooms but it really depends on your own room set up and if you loft beds and things like that. And, remember, you don’t have to bring ALL of your clothes. You can trade out during visits home (for fall break, Thanksgiving, etc.).

I would say to ship some and buy some here. You can ship to the post office (you get your PO Box when you’re at AARO) and buy the bulkier stuff at Target or something here in Dallas. My roommate freshman year was from Orange County and that’s what he did and it seemed like it worked well.

I’m a sophomore and we found out August 1 who our roommate/which room we would have, but it may have moved up a little bit.

I am a junior at SMU and I am from Lakeland, FL.

I bought most of my stuff in Dallas (minus clothing and other memorabilia that I already owned).

Target is very close to campus (we have a few Targets in the area) and we have one Walmart a little farther away but still not too distant.

It is much more convenient and the SMU post office takes too long so I wouldn’t put all your eggs in that basket.

Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone for the advice. We will ship some clothes and buy everything for the dorm locally–hopefully ordered in advance, after seeing the dorms at AARO. We are from the Northeast so I’m guessing the first trip home will be Thanksgiving. We had assumed warm weather for Dallas and no need for winter clothes–until this year’s superbowl!
