Questions from a CAS prospective applicant

Hi everyone! I’m a current junior who is thinking about applying to NYU next year and I have a few questions.
I’m looking to go pre med with a major in Biochemistry.

  1. I've heard that NY applicants are eligible for more merit aid? Is this even remotely true? Does NYU give a lot of merit aid to lure in students who would otherwise choose an Ivy? (from what I can tell on naviance, my stats appear to be a bit higher than the average- see my chance thread if you want my stats)
  2. How common/easy is it to get a research position as a freshman? I'm currently doing research and LOVE it, and I definitely want to continue that experience into college.
  3. Positives and negatives of open campus layout? Is it harder to make friends?
  4. How is medical school placement for premeds at NYU? Do students usually take a gap year before starting medical school or is are they usually able to finish all requirements before applying?
  5. How hard is it to maintain a respectable GPA (>3.7) to be competitive in med school admissions if I major in the sciences?
  6. I am looking to double major (maybe double degree) in Biochem and Economics-- is this hard to accomplish? I love both areas and would like to continue pursuing these interests in college.
  7. How is the Public Health+ Chem/Bio major? Is it better to just get an MPH later on if I am interested in public health?
  8. Your favorite aspect of NYU's undergraduate experience?
  9. Your least favorite " " " " "?

I love the urban environment and fast-paced surroundings of NYU!
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, you’re the best!

bump! please help me out here, thanks!

  1. NY applicants who are low-income/otherwise disadvantaged might be eligible for more money under the HEOP program. Otherwise, how much money they give depends on how much they want you.
  2. It's doable, and you can actually apply for undergraduate research grants specifically designated for freshmen and sophomores: http://www.nyu.edu/cas/DURF/
  3. NYU is notorious for its lack of community, so it can be tough if you are not outgoing/willing to talk to strangers
  4. Regarding medical school placement I have no idea, but there's a fair mix of people who apply for entry right after graduation and people who take gap years.
  5. I don't think it's that hard, but your mileage will vary based on your skill in science.
  6. It's possible, but both are challenging majors and you may have some really unforgiving semesters in terms of hard classes.
  7. No idea, the program is fairly new
  8. NYC, obviously
  9. Big science classes way too early in the morning. Also there are a ton of gunner-type Stern and pre-med kids

Thanks! Didn’t know about the undergraduate research grants, I’ll definitely look into that.
