questions from a potential transfer

1) What's Middlebury's social scene like? Is it really as preppy as everyone says? Is it entirely drinking/drugs based?

2) How's the theater program, both academic and extracurricular? Are theater classes good? Is it easy to act/direct?

Thanks!

1) Not as preppy as Williams or Amherst. By preppy, I mean the culture. Most people are spoiled and rich, and thus insensitive. There's a lot of drinking (we are in the middle of nowhere), not that much drugs. What are you looking for in a social scene?

2) Theater is superb here. I'm in beginning acting, and the professors are extremely keen. Grading is also relatively generous within the acting department. There are numerous plays being produced every semester. If you're any good at acting, it should be really easy to get into a student-produced or even faculty-produced play.

I'm really just looking for an alternative to drinking all the time. Is there any kind of sub-free community? Or sub-free activities? Basically, are there people who don't want to drink all the time?

You should be aware that it is often very difficult to transfer into top LACs like Middlebury. Such schools are small to begin with, and have very high retention rates. There are typically just a handful of openings, and hundreds of transfer applicants. So transfer acceptance rates are usually even lower than regular acceptance rates, often less than 10%.

Midd has already announced that they will not be accepting any transfers for Spring 2009. You can still apply for Fall 2009.

There are plenty of kids who don't drink. In fact, there are several dorms or portions of dorms that are substance free.
