questions from online SAT official

3 You cannot expect to treat your friends badly and no one notices.
(A) and no one notices
(B) and have no one notice
(C) without notice by someone
(D) without notice by no one
(E) without the result of somebody noticing

C ‘s error occurs because notice is used as a noun here and when notice is a verb the meaning changes?
when can't we use notice as a verb then?

3 The serious purpose of the paper-airplane flying contest, which attracted many novel and sometimes truly ------- entries, was to determine whether any ------- aerodynamic designs could be discovered.
(A) unorthodox . . conventional
(B) bizarre. . revolutionary
(C) derivative. . imaginative
(D) mundane . . predictable
(E) ungainly. . aesthetic

Choice (C) is incorrect. "Derivative" means unoriginal, and "imaginative" means creative. If one were to insert these terms into the text, the sentence would read "The serious purpose of the paper-airplane flying contest, which attracted many novel and sometimes truly derivative entries, was to determine whether any imaginative aerodynamic designs could be discovered." If the entries were based on already established designs, the contest would not have been likely to yield many imaginative or original designs, so choice (C) does not make sense.

but i thought that derivate would be right!!

thanks

bump~~~~~~~~~

I do not know what you are asking in the first question. The correct answer is B.

For the second question, look at the other adjective, "novel" before the first blank. Novel means new, unconventional, and NOT derivative. So the word you choose to put in the first spot has to mean something close to it; A and B are the only ones that fit the bill. When you look at the second word, you will see that choice B is the correct answer.

thank you for your replying
but from what i understand, doesn' t derivative mean sth new and unconventional? that is what my dictionary says....
for the 1st one, the official guide explanation is that notice can' tbe used as a noun here b'cuz the meaning will change, still why can't i use without notice by anypne, it sounds right to me

and some more questions

So it seems, anyway. Yet given what scientists know how brains work, even the ability to perceive a paper clip on a messy desk represents an extraordinary and mysterious achievement.

what does" so it seems , anyway" mean? i know it is a changing point, but how can english be used like this?

10 The educator’s remarks stressed that well-funded literacy programs are needed if everyone is to gain the skills required for survival in society.

(C) there is a need of well-funded literacy programs for everyone will gain
(D) a need for well-funded literacy programs and everyone will gain

the OG Explanation for Incorrect Answer E :

Choice (E) creates an illogical sentence. A noun can be "stressed," but an adverb ("why") cannot.

my question is but still why can't stress "emphazise" the reason why?

17 An economical and efficient recycling center is accessible to the public, responsive to community needs, and comply with current federal regulations governing waste disposal. No error

ANSWERS AND EXPLANATIONS

Corrected Sentence: An economical and efficient recycling center is accessible to the public, responsive to community needs, and complies with current federal regulations governing waste disposal.

Explanation for Correct Answer C :

The error in this sentence occurs at (C), where there is subject-verb disagreement. The plural verb "comply" does not agree with its singular subject ("recycling center").

my question is : i chose C nevertheless for i believe the sentence lacks of parellism, but the correct made above by official guide says that it is a subject-verb disagreement, where when comply is changed complies, the sentence will contain no error, still i believe it should changed to be complied with, just as be accessible and be responsive

a paragraph excerpted from the long passage:
Herd demanded that I connect (thankfully without perfect symmetry) my biology
and autobiography, my race and gender, my being a Black
40 woman, to my skill as a historian, and write for her and for
the local chapter members of the National Council a history
of Black women in Indiana.

Why say thankfully without perfect symmetry? it is not one of the question but it made me curious

18 In line 11, “progress” most nearly means
(A) evolution
(B) improvement
(C) prosperity
(D) promotion
(E) advance

ANSWERS AND EXPLANATIONS

Explanation for Correct Answer E :

Choice (E) is correct. The word "progress" in this context means a ceremonial journey. Line 11 refers to members of British royalty making such a trip to Westminster Abbey

ok, i understand the question but got it wrong b'cuz i haven't heard of Westminster Abbey in English, but shouldn't ETS avoid these sorts of questions b'cuz it requires background knowledge? i mean, if i know Westminster Abbey is a cathedral , i would definety got the right; but since i lack the background information, i have no clue where the royals are going, therefore i can't figure out the meaning of Progess

can bats to look be a complete sentence? can anyone plz explain the grammar here ?

thx

You sort of answered your own question. Stress can emphazise the reason why something is necessary, but it cannot emphasize why. The reason is a noun (a thing) while why is not.

"Complied with" cannot work because the rest of the sentence is in the present tense. The center is accessible, is responsive and complies

No idea where the question is referring to, so can't help there

In the future, it would help if you underline the parts of the sentence that are being replaced.
