I recently completed my main essay for the Common App. After a lot of condensing and cutting down, my essay still stands at 827 words. I'm not sure if I've formatted it correctly - it is currently single space, not indented, with a space between each paragraph. Is this correct? In this format, the essay is about a page and a half. I know there is a 500 word minimum, and a 5000 or 6000 character maximum, but what do you think is a proper essay length. I know mine is PERMITTED to be this long, but what is your philosophy on what the admissions officers prefer? I've sent my essay to a coach also, who made no notes about the essay being too long... i dont think it is overly redundant or detailed, but i may be wrong. what do you think?

oops i mean 250 word minimum… regardless is it okay?

Just do it! My essay approaches that word count, and I’ll be damned if anyone tells me I need to shorten it…

As long as it is interesting the admissions officer should not even think about length being an issue.
