Questions on the order of application process

So I was always curious. Not whether if I get in or not. This is not a chance me thing. But like, how they set things up? One particular question I had is: Do they evaluate financial aid estimates for ALL applicants even if you were not to be admitted. Or do they figure out the admitted ones and only estimate theirs? Thanks  Just curious

I had a similar question and received these answers: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1286017-does-admissions-forward-accepted-applications-financial-aid.html

However, some people said that they finish admissions then draw up financial aid packages, so I’m not sure which is right.

Huh? So I’m still unsure now  hahah

I believe they only do the financial packages for accepted applicants just because it would make more sense. Plus, Brown is need-blind.

That is what I am thinking as well! Thank you for the response Browny :)

Did you by chance get an email from FinAid clarifying details about your FAFSA? I did today…now I’m making CRAZY assumptions about being admitted.

Hahah not about FAFSA but yes! Some details clarifying my financial aid. But they say things like “We need this…in case you were to be admitted.” Now my question is, especially one week before decisions release date, if I were rejected, why would they even bother reviewing my financial aid! lol we think alike. But who knows. Don’t want to get to hopeful!

I’m pretty sure that they only do financial aid packages for those who are accepted. The same thing happened to me about a week and a half ago: I got an email from someone in the financial aid office asking for clarification and three days later I got a likely letter. I highly doubt that they make packages for about 18000 applicants (assuming about 60% apply for aid) when only 1500 are going to be accepted. That would be a complete waste of time and money. It may not mean you have definitely been accepted, but I think it means you are at least in the final “rounds” of admission (if that makes sense.)

Yes justheaverage! It makes perfect sense. And congratulations on your acceptance! Thats amazing! lol Well now I am feeling better. I really hope I get in! :)

They definitely don’t make packages for everyone but they also probably make packages for more than just accepted students. I know from past experiences that applicants’ statuses can change as little as 2-3 days before the letters go out. They must have some offers drawn up for people who don’t make it in when you get down to the wire in case things get changed around.

^^They don’t make packages for anyone. They make sure all the info that is needed to make a package is there. Once the decisions are made, its very quick to “make a package”, if all the info is there and accounted for. That’s why they send letters to those from whom they need clarification, so that nothing gets held up once decisions are in to them.

mhmm - So are you saying an email from FinAid is a good sign? Or just them making sure they have everyone’s information before they get the decisions from admissions.

Well I got my clarification email a few days ago. I understand if they wanted my information to prepare just in case I did get in if it was january. But the fact they are putting it together 1 week before the decision date release sort of ruins that idea for me. They are “preparing” one week before. Atleast thats what I like to tell myself to make myself feel better  hahah

But I agree with Mhmm and IWannaBebrown. I don’t think EVERYONE gets a package. Big waste of time no? But I don’t know if its a good sign or not? Maybe Mhmm or IWannaBeBrown has an answer?

Im not an expert at all but from what I understand no one gets a package till the official decision. Even in need blind institutions there is a fixed amount of money that needs to be split a fixed number of ways. That can’t be done by getting everyone a package, since if we drink the cool aid of “need blind”, the fin. aid office doesn’t know the percentage of full pay acceptances, the full ride acceptances or anything in between, until those decisions are “sent down” to them by the admissions office. All they can do is make sure everything is in - and in terms of this being january or a week before - people are still getting their tax reports in. I do think that the “automatic reject” pile gets eliminated before they do the serious work of compilation.

My situation is unique. I’ve had every financial aid form in for months, and we got our tax return in immediately. The email I got asked me to talk to my parents and have them “explain” what a certain line in my FAFSA meant. This disproves the theory that they only send emails to gather all of the forms and basic information. I was asked such a specific question that maybe it means they’re building my FinAid package. They knew I had all my forms in, so they must have been looking very closely at my forms to ask such a question. Fingers crossed!

I really wish they hasn’t sent me that email haha. I’ve been thinking about conspiracy theories all day, but I know that all of my thoughts are purely conjecture. It would really sting if they emailed me a week before decisions came out and then rejected me…

I have no inside information or knowledge. What mhmm is saying makes sense to me though.

@cougar - one assumes that when one is gathering forms, they are not only satisfied with the number of forms but the content as well. Thus asking about a line item. It’s all part of the process. I know its nerve wracking but hang on till the 29th!
